Let’s talk about being cool. Not the gatekept, who’s-allowed-in-the-club version. I mean the kind where anyone, any gender, any person who wants to dress a little bolder gets to decide they’re in. Now that is something I want to be a part of.
I used to think caring about clothing and how I presented myself was frivolous, but I’ve since reframed it as self-expression. I feel the same way about interior design. What we wear and what we surround ourselves with are breadcrumbs of who we are. There’s nothing wrong with having fun with that. In fact, I think we could all stand to have a little more fun with it.
If one of the things you’re trying to call in this summer is more play, more boldness, more “wait, can I actually wear this?” — this one’s for you. Consider it an addendum to my original post on colorful clothing (which has recently been updated!).
Some tips to get you started:
Find your descriptor words. What is the feeling you’re trying to create by dressing out of your comfort zone? Do you want to feel bold? Do you want to infuse more joy into your life? These words will help guide you when you’re actually picking what to wear.
Scour your closet before you shop elsewhere. Have a friend help you with this! Sometimes we need outside eyes to show us what we can do with the things we have. This is also a great exercise to notice the things you haven’t worn in a long time. Donate those things. Remove the excess before you bring anything in.
Speaking of friends, raid their closets too. I have a friend whose stuff somehow always fits me better than my own clothes. Host a swap if you want to make an event out of it, or just text someone to do an exchange so you both get something new without spending a dime.
Okay, advice dispensed. Let’s actually get dressed. Here’s how I’d style outfits for the mood I’m chasing.
⭐ TIPS:
Sets are your best friend in this scenario. I love buying a matching top and bottom because it makes getting dressed feel effortless on days I don’t have it in me to build an outfit from scratch.
Don’t underestimate the power of good sunglasses, especially when you’re tired. They’re the fastest way to look pulled together when you feel anything but.
I’m not a fancy handbag person. When I’m running on no energy, the last thing I want to worry about is babying a bag. I want something durable that I won’t be devastated about if it gets a little beat up. This straw handbag does the trick.
⭐ TIPS:
Find a tee that’s simple but has at least one fun design element or an unexpected detail. It keeps the look easy without being boring.
I can’t think of any occasion where I want to wear tight-fitting clothing, but especially not when I’m just lounging around being cozy. Barrel jeans or any loose-fitting pants are key here. As my husband says, “I can’t believe these are trendy again!” But they’re comfy and cool, okay? Especially in leopard, which I will not be talked out of.
Comfortable shoes >>>> in a fun color.
⭐ TIPS:
Worry less about being matchy matchy and instead find a few colors you can channel between all of the pieces you’re wearing.
If it resembles clown attire, maybe you will like it?? The frillier and sillier, the better.
I’ve been really into finding simple shoes with one small detail that makes them feel elevated, like the shiny gem on these sandals above.
⭐ TIPS:
When you don’t know where to start with an outfit, find a bold piece (like this striped skirt) to influence the other pieces that bring the look together.
Statement earrings are always fun and a good conversation starter. Why not throw some bananas on your ears?
The same can be said for statement bags. Bold color! Tassels! Yes!
⭐ TIPS:
Nothing screams vacation to me like a little see-through moment. I love this sequin one. Throw a slip underneath if you want more coverage, or just say F it and channel your vacation mode because it’s hot outside and who cares?
I don’t know why a chunky beaded necklace feels like paradise, but it does, and I suggest you add one to your outfit.
Melissa sandals are very comfortable. That is the whole tip!
However you decide to show up this summer, just make sure it actually feels like you. That’s the whole point. Now go share this with a friend who needs it (and then go raid their closet).
