“Color expresses something in itself.
One can’t do without it.”
— Vincent van Gogh
Two weekends ago, on a bright, blue sky kind of morning in Amsterdam, Jose and I set out with the girls on something I’d been looking forward to all summer:
A pilgrimage to the Van Gogh Museum.
I must confess that I’m not normally a museum person, but there were so many moments that day that brought me to tears. And I know the connection I felt to Vincent was all because of the time I’d spent reading his letters before our trip — learning the stories behind his paintings before I stood in front of them myself.
I’ve loved sharing some of my favorite letters from Vincent with you this summer, and today, I’ve brought them all together in one place.
If there’s someone you know who might enjoy this collection, please feel free to share it with them, too. And I hope you’ll enjoy one last walk through the heath, where a red sun is setting behind the pine trees, and an artist now beloved across the world is just beginning to find his way.
With love,
Candace
