Mikey Bligh-Smith (He/they), photo by Jack Hauxwell, taken at Scott Hall Mills.

Mikey’s conception of comedy changed for the better when he first discovered the alternative scene at the Edinburgh Fringe. He dived into that world with an abrasive form of anti-humour at university, but he’s since tempered his approach in favour of a more congenial chaos, telling me he’s now having the kind of fun he was after.

Mikey attended multiple clown workshops with previous guest Ozzy Algar and their mutual friend Joe Kent-Walters, with whom he’d eventually form the duo The Lovely Boys. But they live quite far apart nowadays, so he’s striking out on his own, like Robbie Williams.

The double-barrelled blonde bombshell is developing his debut at sporadic live dates across the UK, and you can listen to our comfy chat below.

Mikey was a terrific guest, and no doubt he’s a pleasure to work with! We had a great laugh, and I hope it won’t be long before I can see his show.

It was fantastic to get further insight into Philippe Gaulier’s clown workshops, as I’ve been drawn to his mystique from afar, like many others. Gaulier passed away in February, so unfortunately, I’ll never get to hear from the man himself, but we’ve also heard bits and pieces from Ozzy and Chelsea Birkby in the past.

As for Mikey, he’ll be performing at the London Hospital Tavern on April 22nd, as well as Aces and Eights Bar & Pizza (also in London) on April 28th, Machynlleth Comedy Festival on May 2nd, and the Leeds Hyde Park Book Club on July 15th.

Thank you ever so much for reading and continuing to support the blog. I hope you can accept the lack of a written transcript with this post, as I’m time and energy-squeezed at present. If any of my readers are hearing impaired, do reach out so that I can prioritise finding a solution for the future.
