The new op now is to declare MAGA dead so that another politician can rise. It’s also a way to neuter Trump’s ability to influence who the GOP will run in 2028.
It’s too early to risk running against Trump on an issue — and frankly, every Republican after an incumbent has to do this to some extent, as a way to forge their own path and show that they have something else, something better to offer. It’s just too politically dangerous to do that right now while Trump still holds high approval amongst the base.
This is why the erosion in his satisfaction has to be gradual, the proverbial frog in a boiling pot of water, if you will.
Trump’s ability to influence the next Republican presidential candidate has to be contained, too. What better way to do that than by assailing him as an unsuccessful oathbreaker?
