Dana Dinnawi · The Quiet Return

When I started The Quiet Return, I had a vision for what I wanted it to become.

Not a detailed plan.

Just a feeling.

I could see it in the distance, but I couldn’t quite make out its shape.

I’ve learned over the years that almost everything worthwhile evolves.

It reveals itself slowly.

You can push for clarity...

or you can allow it to arrive.

I’ve tried to do the latter.

Instead of forcing this publication into a format because I thought I should have one, I’ve let it become what it wanted to become.

And over the past few months, something unexpected happened.

The Quiet Return found its rhythm.

As I wrote each week’s essay, I found myself collecting other things.

Observations that didn’t belong in an essay.

Recipes I wanted to share.

Objects I loved.

Places I kept returning to.

Books that stayed with me.

Conversations with the body.

Small moments that deserved a home, even if they weren’t the main story.

Then I realized...

I’d done this before.

Some of you may remember Empowered Wellness & Living, the online magazine I created many years ago with several wonderful colleagues.

It was a collaborative magazine about living well in every sense of the word.

How to nourish your body.

Create a healthy home.

Cook simple, wholesome food.

Care for yourself.

And pay attention to the small choices that shape a meaningful life.

That magazine no longer exists.

But the idea behind it never really left me.

I think it was simply waiting for the right home.

And it turns out...

that home was Substack.

So, beginning tomorrow, the last Sunday of every month will look a little different.

Instead of receiving a single essay, you’ll receive The Quiet Return: The Monthly Issue.

Think of it as the Sunday edition.

A slower, richer collection of everything I’ve been writing, noticing, questioning, and living throughout the month.

Each issue will include:

Featured Essay
A long-form story, the heart of each issue.

Notebook
Thoughts, observations, and journal entries that never became essays.

Body Language
A conversation with one symptom, written as though your body were speaking for itself.

At Home
Seasonal recipes, rituals, and the ordinary moments that make a house feel lived in.

Reading List
One book, essay, or article I think deserves your time.

Objects
The things finding a permanent place in my home, and why.

Places
The cafés, hotels, neighborhoods, and corners of the world I keep returning to.

Things I’m Changing My Mind About
Because changing our minds may be one of the healthiest things we ever do.

Nothing else is changing.

Every Sunday, I’ll continue publishing a new essay.

I’ll still be sharing my Sunday Notes and Things I’m Changing My Mind About throughout the month.

This is simply something more.

A place where all the pieces can live together.

A magazine, of sorts.

One that feels both entirely new and strangely familiar.

I’m incredibly excited to share the very first issue with you tomorrow.

I hope you’ll pour yourself a coffee or tea, settle into your favorite chair, and spend some unhurried time with it.

Thank you, as always, for being here.

Warmly,

Dana
