Il mio nomadismo mi ha portato a vivere questo inverno a New York City.
Avrei voluto lasciarmi tutto alle spalle ed essere totalmente presente, nel qui ed ora, ma la verità è che stava per succedere qualcosa di davvero importante che ha richiesto quasi tutte le mie energie.
Il 27 Febbraio infatti esce il nuovo disco dei MOMBAO, “LIVE?”, e comincia il nuovo tour (27.2 Trieste, 28.2 Venezia, 7.3 Milano, 19.4 Torino, BIGLIETTI QUI).

Inoltre, il disco non uscirà sulle piattaforme di streaming ma verrà distribuito fisicamente di casa in casa, durante un tour di listening parties nei salotti della nostra community.

L’esperienza dell’home tour dell’anno scorso mi ha donato una prospettiva nuova, ed è stata così importante e rivoluzionaria che ha contaminato anche il mondo dei MOMBAO.

Così, mentre guardavo la neve scendere sui tetti di Brooklyn, mi sono accorto che i temi alla base del mio progetto solista e di MOMBAO molto spesso coincidono e questa newsletter è il luogo migliore in cui farli convergere.

Per questa ragione da oggi in poi questa newsletter avrà anche uno spazio dedicato a MOMBAO.

Per chi non dovesse conoscere il progetto, vi lascio qui un video di una performance dal vivo, perchè provare a spiegare a parole cosa succede durante i nostri live è davvero impossibile. Dateci un occhio QUI.

Questa impossibilità è anche la ragione per cui è nato il nuovo disco.
Una delle domande che ci siamo posti più spesso infatti è stata: come facciamo a traslare in una registrazione quell’energia indescrivibile e trasformativa che avviene durante un concerto?
Così abbiamo provato a registrare più concerti possibili, con l’idea di pubblicare un semplice disco live, ma, come mi succede spesso, le cose sono completamente sfuggite di mano.
Una volta finito il tour, mentre ascoltavamo le registrazioni, ci siamo accorti che in tutte le registrazioni in studio passate, c’era sempre un vuoto.

Quel vuoto era la vostra assenza.

Perchè il suono dei MOMBAO dal vivo è fatto dai nostri strumenti e dalle nostre voci ma anche e soprattutto dall’interazione con voi, e sentirvi finalmente battere le mani e cantare, urlare e ballare intorno a noi in una registrazione è come se avesse “completato” il sound. Per la prima volta sentivamo delle registrazioni in cui i microfoni erano al centro dello spazio e in cui il suono, seppur sporco e pieno di errori, ci riportava lì, insieme a voi.

Così abbiamo deciso di fare un esperimento. Invece che produrre un disco live che documenta un concerto specifico dei MOMBAO, abbiamo deciso di affrontarlo come un collage, un patchwork di registrazioni dal vivo che provasse a rappresentare l’esperienza in maniera immersiva, a 360 gradi.

Può succedere che la strofa sia un concerto, il ritornello un altro e alcune volte può avvenire addirittura che ci sia un concerto per l’orecchio destro e uno per quello sinistro.

Ma non ci siamo fermati qui, perché MOMBAO è un progetto anarchico e completamente libero.
Così siamo andati in studio e su questo scheletro di registrazioni cucite l’una con l’altra, abbiamo cominciato a registrare chitarre, pianoforti, fisarmoniche, percussioni e anche un coro.
Siamo entrati in un processo senza limiti e confini e, alla fine, ascoltandolo, ci siamo chiesti: ma è un disco live oppure un disco in studio?
Da questo interrogativo, nasce il punto di domanda.

Perchè LIVE? è un disco live, ma anche no.

Ma come si fa a promuovere un disco “live ma anche no”?
Il mondo attuale e le piattaforme di streaming dividono il mondo in categorie, e MOMBAO non è mai rientrato in nessuna di queste.
Così ci siamo permessi di continuare a sperimentare senza porci nessun limite e custodendo preziosamente le nostre domande dentro ai nostri cuori e ponendocele anche per tutto ciò che concerne come il progetto si finanzia, come si relaziona con la sua community e come si promuove.

Ci siamo domandati quale sia la responsabilità di un artista oggi visto che il mondo musicale è profondamente in crisi. Siamo consapevoli che questa è un’opportunità incredibile per attuare un cambiamento profondo.
Le piattaforme di streaming investono in armi e AI e non distribuiscono i proventi agli artisti in maniera dignitosa, le playlist sono segretamente inondate dallo stesso Spotify di musica fatta con AI con foto di band fatte con AI e bio scritte con chatgpt. Non tutti ne sono a conoscenza ma la verità è che guadagniamo meno da centomila ascolti su Spotify che da dieci dischi venduti, e ventimila ascoltatori mensili casuali valgono molto meno di dieci persone che vengono ai nostri concerti.

Perchè occupare uno spazio con il proprio corpo è, tuttora, il modo più incisivo per affermare il proprio desiderio.
Per tutte queste ragioni, dopo innumerevoli discussioni, abbiamo deciso che il disco dei MOMBAO non uscirà sulle piattaforme di streaming.

Ma quale è l’alternativa?
La nostra risposta è la stessa che mi ha spinto ad intraprendere il tour nelle case.
Innanzitutto essere consapevoli che chi viene ai concerti non è la “nostra fanbase” ma una comunità di cui siamo, in parte, responsabili e che condivide valori e relazioni. Creare comunità e nutrirla è la cosa più importante e rivoluzionaria che possiamo fare ora.

In secondo luogo che bisogna escludere gli intermediari fra l’artista e la propria community, in modo da nutrire un rapporto trasparente, etico e sostenibile.

Uscire semplicemente dalle piattaforme di streaming senza dire nulla sarebbe stato come togliersi da soli la propria voce, così abbiamo deciso invece di alzarla e fare un po’ di sano casino.
A dire il vero, sulle piattaforme di streaming rilasceremo qualcosa ma non quello che vi aspettate, sarà più una rivendicazione, un messaggio in una bottiglia di molotov o una pernacchia carnevalesca.

Ma se il disco non esce sulle piattaforme di streaming, quale è la nostra alternativa?

La soluzione perfetta non esiste ancora, abbiamo però alcune proposte che abbiamo chiamato, in maniera un po’ ironica, un po’ supponente:
LA DISTRIBUZIONE RIVOLUZIONARIA.

1. LISTENING PARTIES
LIVE? verrà distribuito live.
Il disco non viaggia sulle piattaforme? Lo facciamo viaggiare noi, organizzando un tour di listening parties direttamente nelle case della nostra comunità, per conoscerci davvero e ascoltarlo insieme, nei loro salotti. Sarà una vera e propria “distribuzione fisica”.

2. LABORATORI “OLTRE LA PAROLA”
Oltre ai concerti, MOMBAO ha anche un’anima laboratoriale e si chiama “Oltre La Parola”, ovvero un percorso partecipativo e giocoso in cui accompagniamo le persone ad inventare, dal nulla, un canto popolare comunitario in una lingua inventata. Il laboratorio è il nostro modo per condividere con la nostra comunità la poetica, la ricerca musicale e linguistica e i processi alla base del progetto.

3. DISCO FISICO
Se la loro musica avesse una casa, sarebbe un vinile. Gli streams spariscono, i dischi fisici rimangono. Comprare un vinile direttamente dall’artista è un’affermazione. Un modo per sostenere la musica, senza intermediari.
Il disco può essere acquistato ai concerti, oppure direttamente sul nostro sito.

4. SUPPORTER DELUXE PACK
Pensato per chi vuole davvero sostenere il progetto e questa idea folle, il deluxe pack comprende il disco fisico firmato, due biglietti per un concerto del tour, il download digitale, alcuni gadget dal merch e la possibilità di incontrarci dal vivo o online per conoscerci meglio e chiedere tutto ciò che avreste sempre voluto ma non avete mai osato.

5. ANTEPRIMA STREAMING
Per chi non può venire ad un concerto o non ha un lettore di vinili, abbiamo deciso di dare la possibilità di acquistare lo streaming del disco in anteprima.

6. DOWNLOAD ETICO
Per chi vuole ascoltare la musica senza compromessi, abbiamo impostato la possibilità di scaricare i file audio in alta qualità dal profilo Bandcamp, in modalità pay what you want.

Tutto si basa sull’idea che avere cento persone che credono nel progetto e lo sostengono in maniera diretta e senza intermediari, sia più importante e concreto di un milione di “fan” casuali.

My nomadic life has brought me to spend this winter in New York City.
I wanted to leave everything behind and be completely present, in the here and now, but the truth is that something truly important was about to happen, something that required almost all of my energy.

On February 27th, the new MOMBAO record, LIVE?, will be released, and the new tour will begin (Feb 27 Trieste, Feb 28 Venice, Mar 7 Milan, Apr 19 Turin, TICKETS HERE).

However, the record will not be released on streaming platforms. It will be physically distributed from house to house, during a tour of listening parties in the living rooms of our community.
Last year’s home tour gave me a new perspective. It was so important and so revolutionary that it ended up contaminating the world of MOMBAO as well.

So while I was watching the snow fall over the rooftops of Brooklyn, I realized that the themes at the core of my solo project and MOMBAO often coincide, and this newsletter feels like the best place to let them converge.
For this reason, starting today, this newsletter will also include a space dedicated to MOMBAO.

That impossibility is also the reason this new record was born.
One of the questions we kept asking ourselves was: how can we translate into a recording that indescribable, transformative energy that happens during a concert?
We tried recording as much as possible, initially thinking we would simply release a live album. But, as often happens to me, things completely slipped out of our hands.
Once the tour ended and we started listening back to the recordings, we realized that in all our previous studio recordings there had always been something missing.

That missing element was you.

Because the sound of MOMBAO live is made not only of our instruments and our voices, but, above all, of the interaction with you. Hearing you clap, sing, scream, and dance around us in a recording felt like the sound had finally been “completed.” For the first time, we were listening to recordings where the microphones stood at the center of the space, and where the sound, even if raw and full of mistakes, brought us back there, together with you.

So we decided to try an experiment.

Instead of producing a live album documenting one specific concert, we approached it like a collage, a patchwork of live recordings attempting to represent the experience in a fully immersive, 360-degree way.
It may happen that the verse comes from one concert, the chorus from another. Sometimes there might even be one concert in the right ear and another in the left.

But we didn’t stop there — because MOMBAO is an anarchic and completely free project.
We went into the studio and, on top of this skeleton of stitched-together live recordings, we started adding guitars, pianos, accordions, percussion, even a choir.
We entered a process without limits or boundaries, and in the end, listening back, we asked ourselves: is this a live record, or a studio record?
From that question mark, the title was born.

Because LIVE? is a live album — but also not.

But how do you promote a “live but also not” record?
The current world, and streaming platforms, divide everything into categories, and MOMBAO has never really fit into any of them.
So we allowed ourselves to keep experimenting without limits, carefully holding onto our questions, and asking them not only about the music but also about how the project finances itself, how it relates to its community, and how it promotes itself.
We began asking ourselves what the responsibility of an artist is today, in a music world that is deeply in crisis. We are aware that this is an incredible opportunity to create profound change.

Streaming platforms invest in weapons and AI and do not distribute revenue to artists in a dignified way. Playlists are secretly flooded, by Spotify itself, with AI-generated music, AI-generated band photos, and bios written with ChatGPT. Not everyone knows this, but the truth is that we earn less from 100,000 Spotify streams than from selling ten records, and twenty thousand casual monthly listeners are worth far less than ten people who come to our concerts.
Because occupying space with your body is still the most powerful way to affirm your desire.

For all these reasons, after countless discussions, we decided that the new MOMBAO record will not be released on streaming platforms.

So what’s the alternative?
The answer is the same one that pushed me to start touring houses.

First: recognizing that the people who come to our concerts are not our “fanbase,” but a community we are partly responsible for, a community that shares values and relationships. Building and nurturing community is the most important and revolutionary thing we can do right now.

Second: removing intermediaries between the artist and their community, in order to cultivate a transparent, ethical, and sustainable relationship.

Simply leaving streaming platforms without saying anything would have felt like silencing ourselves. So instead, we decided to raise our voice and make a bit of healthy noise.
To be honest, we will release something on streaming platforms, but not what you expect. It will be more like a statement, a message in a Molotov or a carnivalesque raspberry.

But if the record isn’t on streaming platforms, what is the alternative?
The perfect solution doesn’t exist yet. But we do have some proposals, which we’ve named, half ironically, half presumptuously: THE REVOLUTIONARY DISTRIBUTION

LISTENING PARTIES
LIVE? will be distributed live.
If the record doesn’t travel through platforms, we’ll carry it ourselves, organizing a tour of listening parties directly in the homes of our community, meeting for real and listening together in their living rooms. A true physical distribution.
“BEYOND WORDS” WORKSHOPS
Beyond concerts, MOMBAO also has a workshop soul called Beyond Words: a participatory and playful journey in which we guide people to invent, from nothing, a communal folk chant in an invented language. The workshop is our way of sharing the poetics, the musical and linguistic research, and the processes behind the project.
PHYSICAL RECORD
If our music had a home, it would be vinyl. Streams disappear. Physical records remain. Buying vinyl directly from the artist is a statement, a way to support music without intermediaries.
The record can be purchased at concerts or directly on our website.
SUPPORTER DELUXE PACK
Designed for those who truly want to support the project and this crazy idea. The deluxe pack includes a signed physical record, two tickets to a concert on the tour, the digital download, some merch items, and the possibility to meet us — live or online — to get to know each other better and ask everything you’ve always wanted but never dared.
STREAMING PREVIEW
For those who can’t attend a concert or don’t own a vinyl player, we’re offering the possibility to purchase early streaming access to the record.
ETHICAL DOWNLOAD

Everything is based on the idea that having one hundred people who truly believe in the project and support it directly — without intermediaries — is far more important and concrete than having one million casual “fans.”
