Let’s Make Some Outfits For Work

Getting dressed for work can be tricky these days. You want to look polished, but not like you’re giving a power-point presentation at a regional sales conference. So we pulled three outfits we love and broke down what makes them work. We hope you get inspired!

We love the proportions and color combination here. A classic blue button-down tucked into a dramatic chocolate brown midi skirt feels feminine without being fussy. The wide belt is what really makes it because it defines the waist and adds some texture to two otherwise very simple pieces.

Styling tip: Roll or push up the sleeves and leave a few buttons undone. A button-down almost always looks better when it’s styled a little less perfectly.

Proof that you probably already own the beginnings of a great work outfit. Start with a striped button-down and cream pleated trousers, then add something unexpected: In this case, the red necklace and those fantastic red flats.

Styling tip: When an outfit is made up almost entirely of classics, add one slightly offbeat accessory. The red shoes are what keep this from feeling too “office.”

SHOP: We love this striped shirt because it’s cut really well for a women’s body and feels more polished. | These pleated trousers are very well tailored and constructed for the price. | Red woven flats like these feel a little more office appropriate. | These red beads will go with everything.

This might be our favorite and feels like a glimpse of fall. A simple olive cardigan with charcoal pleated trousers feels relaxed but still completely work appropriate. The chic glasses, scarf, belt and boat shoes give it personality.

Styling tip: With a fuller trouser, keep some definition at the waist. Tuck in the layer underneath, wear the cardigan slightly cropped or add a belt so all that volume doesn’t overwhelm you.

Warby Parker makes these ones that are made in Japan that you can get as readers or add your prescription (and are really reasonably priced). | This olive cardigan from Theory is nice and light weight, but they only have size small left. This one is a pretty green and a little cozier. | We absolutely love these charcoal trousers from Ruti! | Here’s a pretty printed scarf for under $40 or you could go the invest route with this stunning Gucci one. | Madewell makes a great black belt with silver buckle, and it’s on sale. | You can’t go wrong with classic Sperry boat shoes. Just add a red cord lace.
