Ritual and Redundancy

Some of my habits have changed. In my cupboard is a card file with my favourite recipes in it. For years, I would pick one out each morning, or take a blank card and fill it out, then each weekend I would use these to compile my shopping list. But I realise it’s sat, unopened, in the cupboard for most of this year. Because - of course - I now use AI.

Each week I say who is home, when I am travelling, and have a chat about what to cook, taking account of the seasons, the family favourites, and time available, as well as whatever it getting to the end of it’s life in the fridge.

So the artefact of the menu cards remains, but stripped of utilitarian value. All that is still holds is the memory of the hours that went into creating it, and the ritual of shuffling the cards within it.

Sooner, or later, I will have to decide whether to throw it out, which is odd, because I still clearly remember the effort in buying it in the first place.

Things fall out of systems, and systems fall out of time.

Use your sixty seconds today to consider this: what held utility but now simply sits within your practice as ritual or symbol?

What space could you clear? And what about for the Organisation as a whole?
