What rules surround you? Our actions are governed by rules, some of which are transcribed, visible, clear, others of which are implicit, imagined, or only partly known. Some are seemingly written in stone, others are discovered through whispered conversations.
Who sets these rules? Who owns and enforces them?
Organisations rely on the rules that they write to keep them safe, compliant, to act with consistency, and as a way of seeking fairness or conformity. These rules they update over time, and compliance may be explicit in your employment contract. These rules may not be universal: they may vary by role, seniority, location, or context. I remember being told off once for using the ‘executive’ bathroom whilst visiting a bank, having transgressed a rule associated with power.

Social groups - tribes and communities - rely on rules for clarity, for safety, for belonging. Sometimes as a way to moderate discussion or conflict. These rules can be harder to figure out, except by being within them. We learn them by observation, or transgression and correction.
