Accountability

Back to basics. To pause, to look around. Social Leadership is a connection to people and place. And an obligation to each.

It’s not a formally defined role - that would be a job - but rather a layer that surrounds and weaves through the formal Organisation. A formal leader - someone with job title and power - may earn Social Leadership, and equally someone who has not power ‘within the system’ may also be granted it.

Reputation earned leading to Social Authority, which is a type of power.

In this sense, Social Leadership is not about achieving the things that we are told to do: it’s about doing the things that need to be done. And at times this requires us to sketch out a cartography of accountability. To work out in which dimension we are accountable to our various systems: our peers and colleagues, reports and leaders, family and local community, ecosystem and planet.
