AI is burning like a wildfire through what many of us have spent our lives constructing: for me, that’s a world of writing and music. I am far from alone in believing a machine cannot do what people do with words or sounds. But that will not stop the onslaught of machine-made versions replacing human ones in myriad ways.

What would seem to lie ahead is a loss of continuity in certain skills, as AI pulls people away from their practice. Harvard College just closed its Writing Center, to take a parochial example from down my street. Is it because the idea of undergraduates sweating over essays already seems outdated?

Or as Mikey Shulman, the CEO of AI music company Suno, has said:

“It’s not really enjoyable to make music now… It takes a lot of time, it takes a lot of practice, you need to get really good at an instrument or really good at a piece of production software. I think the majority of people don’t enjoy the majority of the time they spend making music.”
