Mammoth Rider by Sally Poyton is the start of a new series, featuring Ash who lives in the arctic at a research centre that has de-extincted the woolly mammoth. She has an uncanny ability to communicate with the creatures and befriends a rare albino calf. But when hunters come for their trophy, it’s up to Ash and her friends to save the mammoths. A very enjoyable adventure full of bravery and heart.
Undercover Angel: Grounded by Lisa J Allen is the second book in Phoebe’s adventures as an angel spending time on Earth in a girl’s body. She is supposed to be keeping a low profile but when a three-headed hell hound turns up in her school’s basement she is forced to help the incompetent trainee angel tasked with dealing with the creature. A chaotic, pacy adventure full of humour, demons and digs at modern life.
Wings of the Wyld by Rebecca Rouillard is the first book about Ren Breezewing and her dreams of becoming a wyvern rider. When she fails the Aruchel Entrance Trial to become a knight, she thinks her chance has gone, until she meets the wyld wyverns and realises she can communicate with them. She uses her new found skills to rescue her kidnapped sister. Great worldbuilding and Rusty the Wyvern is a fab character.
The Artemis II mission evoked great interest in space and the Moon, which meant it was a brilliant time to announce the title and release date for my next book, which is Moonlight Robbery, out on 17th September. And I received some glowing feedback from my editor about this story so I can’t wait to share the cover with you and tell you more about the main character, Max soon.
My adult story about a failing marriage is nearing its finale. It took an unexpected twist near the end which has meant I had a few extra plot points to finesse, but it’s nearly there now. It’s been fun writing something a bit different. I hope I can get it published as a novella at some point, once it’s been polished.
A couple of lovely school visits this week, including a full day at one of my local primary schools for several authors as the school celebrated an Amazing Books for Children Day (ABCD). I gave talks to the years 5s and 6s and judged a short story competition. The day was rounded off with a very successful book sales and signing at hometime in the playground.
The tennis season has got off to a slow start with losses in our first matches in both of the leagues we play in. But the games were good fun and pretty close. My partner and I have edged up the local padel ladder, though we were given a 6-2, 6-2 lesson from the pair at the top of the ladder. A bit of golf over Easter, but I was too rusty to show any consistency. Running coaching sessions have resumed with some fun technique exercises and some hard timed runs.
Not much boardgaming to report, but I did manage to try out the expansion to The Lost Expedition (Osprey Games), called Fountain of Youth and Other Adventures, which I received for my birthday last month. It’s a tough solo game and my adventurers all died before reaching the lost city of Z, which is not uncommon. I reckon I only complete the quest about one in three attempts.
