Love magick is one of the most popular and controversial forms of magickal praxis. For many people, the initial appeal of esotericism, particularly practices like witchcraft, is to manifest their desires. The most common things people wish to manifest are love and money. Unlike money though, utilizing spiritual techniques to make someone love you does begin to raise some moral questions. Over the past few years, love magick has become viewed in an increasingly negative way, with some people, in recent times, even comparing love magick to criminal actions.

This is far from the only type of love spell out there though. A common type of far more ethical love spell, and one that tends to lead to more positive outcomes anyways, is to create a list of the traits you desire in your lover. Once you’ve made this list, you create a spell to attract a person with these traits to enter into your life. This type of spell brings in someone who actually does meet your needs and tends to have positive impacts. As it is not attempting to violate someone’s Will, there is no ethical issue.

Another great option for love magick is to simply bring in love itself into your life. A common way this is done is to begin a spiritual relationship with a love goddess, such as Venus. To do this, create an altar, leave offerings, and say her hymns regularly. When you bring in the divine power of love, it also attracts love into your life. For people interested in a more erotic type of love magick, they can do this same process with Gods or Goddesses that also relate to sexuality. If you are seeking both, perhaps consider venerating Innana-Ishtar, as she relates to both love and sex (though most Goddesses of these domains, even Venus, do overlap).

If you feel that you are not ready for these types of workings, there are also magickal workings that will, with time, indirectly lead to more love appearing in your life. These workings include spells and rituals about building up who you are and healing wounds. This could be spells for increasing confidence, making you more attractive, making you communicate better, or increasing social skills. As well, you can do shadow work, including shadow work with love Gods, to work through and resolve any wounds or psychological problems you may have that are blocking you from getting the relationships you want. Honestly, even if you are doing the other options in this article, this is worth doing as well.

Love magick is also not just for people who are seeking new connections, love magick can strengthen the relationships you already have. For couples who are struggling, it can be incredibly valuable to come together and work together on a spell or ritual to strengthen their relationship. If you, as a couple, know that communication is a common struggle, you can do a ritual together where you work to resolve that communication issue. Alternatively, if your relationship is happy and healthy, you can come together to do a ritual or spell to protect that peace and make the relationship last. Love magick is not just for people who are struggling.

Love magick is also a gateway to some of the higher mysteries. While love magick often gets reduced down to something very shallow, there is depth there. To connect with the Gods, we utilize love. It is well-known that Eros is a pathway to Agape and Agape is part of the highest mysteries. For this reason, we can actually utilize love magick to strengthen our relationships, bring in deeper closeness, and use that profound bond to get closer to the Gods themselves. Through love magick, we can experience divine union, which can make us ascend towards the real mysteries.

Love magick is so often dismissed online as a frivolous form of magick, or worse, one that is full of evil and miasma. While love magick can be performed to those ends, there are so many other reasons to engage in love magick. Love magick can heal our deep internal wounds, make our relationships stronger, make us confident, and even bring us closer to the Godhead. Look for the nuance and complexity in things, don’t just dismiss them, because they sometimes can be bad. Magick is a tool. Much like how a hammer can build a house or bludgeon someone, so can love magick. It can break, but it can also bond. There is beauty in this practice, so don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.
