CyberMind · CyberMind

I didn't know what a firewall was three weeks ago.

Not exaggerating. I thought "phishing" was a spelling mistake. I assumed "hacking" was just something that happened to banks and celebrities — not regular people like me.

Then I started digging. And what I found genuinely scared me.

What Cybersecurity Actually Is (No Jargon)

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and data from digital attacks.

That's the textbook definition. Here's what it actually means:

Every time you log into Instagram, buy something on Amazon, or connect to WiFi at Starbucks — you're exposed. Your passwords, your bank info, your personal messages. All of it.

Cybersecurity is the lock on the door. The problem is most people don't even know the door exists.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Here's a stat that hit me hard:

A cyberattack happens every 39 seconds.

Not once a day. Not once an hour. Every. 39. Seconds.

And the targets aren't just big corporations. 43% of cyberattacks target small businesses and individuals — people who assume they're too small to be worth it.

That assumption is exactly what hackers count on.

The 3 Things Cybersecurity Protects

When I started the Cisco Intro to Cybersecurity course, the first thing they teach you is what's actually at stake. They call it the CIA Triad — and no, it has nothing to do with the government:

1. Confidentiality — Keeping your data private. Only the right people can access it.

2. Integrity — Making sure your data hasn't been tampered with. What you sent is what they received.

3. Availability — Ensuring your systems are up and running when you need them. No ransomware locking you out.

Everything in cybersecurity flows from these three things. Once I understood this, the whole field started making sense.

What I'm Doing About It

I enrolled in the Cisco NetAcad Introduction to Cybersecurity course — it's free, beginner-friendly, and actually teaches you something useful instead of drowning you in theory.

I'm documenting everything here. The wins, the confusion, the "wait, what?" moments.

And while I learn, I'm also testing AI tools that make staying secure way easier — things like password managers, VPNs, and AI-assisted threat scanners that do the heavy lifting for you.

Speaking of which — if you're not using a VPN yet, start there. It's the single easiest thing you can do to protect yourself online. I've been using NordVPN — it encrypts your connection so even if someone intercepts your traffic, they get garbage. Takes 5 minutes to set up.

What's Coming Next

This newsletter is my public learning journal. Every week I'll break down:

• What I learned (in plain English, zero jargon)

• What AI tools are actually useful for beginners

• Real threats you need to know about — explained simply

No fluff. No gatekeeping. Just the stuff that matters.

If you're starting from zero like me — subscribe. We'll figure this out together.

See you in Day 2. 🔐

— Zero Day

🔗 Tools I'm Using:

• NordVPN — VPN for beginners (easy setup, solid privacy)

• Cisco NetAcad — Free cybersecurity course
