Hello friends!

When I was an art student in uni, it was my dream to become a music video director. Michel Gondry was (and still is) my god - his trippy My Chemical Brothers video exploded my brain - the lo-fi VHS aesthetic, mathematical structures and meticulous choreography mixed with quirky handmade props and costumes… it really just opened my mind about how powerful a 3 minute video could be. (I highly recommend you to go down the same rabbit hole…) Which is why, I’m delighted to present you a new monthly series I’ve wanted to host since four years ago - the MUSIC VIDEO APPRECIATION CLUB! 🎵

The Music Video Appreciation Club is monthly watch party, bringing in an hour-long selection of MVs curated by our favourite creatives. With drinks and popcorn, we encourage you to enjoy experimental filmmaking while discovering new music the old way - through friends instead of the algorithm.

To kickstart this, I’m delighted to have artist-filmmaker Simon Liu , who most recently exhibited at the Whitney Biennale, show a series of skateboarding video clips he grew up watching in early 2000s and discuss how they influenced his moving image practice. His selction considers alternative uses of civic space, interactive approaches of camera perspective, and the joys of disobedience. Alongside these skate clips, Liu will screen several of his recent short films, ending with an artist sharing.

Simon Liu (b. Hong Kong, 1987) is an artist filmmaker whose practice centers on the rapidly evolving psychological and sociopolitical landscapes of his homeland of Hong Kong through material abstraction, speculative history, and subversion of documentary cinema practices via short films, multi-channel video installations, mixed media prints, and 16mm projection performances.

Liu's work has been exhibited at institutions including the Whitney Biennial 2024, Museum of Modern Art, MOCA Los Angeles, The Shed, PICA, Tai Kwun Contemporary, Museum of the Moving Image, Everson Museum, Moderna Museet, "Dreamlands: Expanded", and the M+ Museum. His films have screened at festivals globally including the Toronto, New York, Berlin, Rotterdam, BFI London, Edinburgh, Jeonju, and Hong Kong International Film Festivals alongside the Sundance Film Festival, New Directors/New Films, CPH:DOX, Cinéma du Réel, Punto de Vista, Viennale, and the Media City Film Festival. The M+ Museum and MoMA recently acquired Liu’s Quadruple 16mm Projection Highview, along with other recent works, for their Permanent Collections. He is currently editing his first feature film, Staffordshire Hoard.

Don’t forget, our exhibition of Mass Transit Railway by Sing Jantzen Tse is still up! It’s open to the public for free, from Tuesday to Saturday 1-7pm.

Anyone know if Michel Gondry would be up for doing something in Hong Kong? 👀

Cheers,
Eunice
