Charlie to the Rescue! · Charlie Dog

Arlo: unaltered male, 1y6m, 60.2lbs

Arlo came to BARCS on 8/17 and is currently on a 10-day bite quarantine that ends on 8/27.

Arlo is looking for a rescue partner or experienced adopter who can provide structure, management, and continued behavior support. He has a documented history of killing a cat in his previous home and has demonstrated a high prey drive. Because of this, Arlo cannot be placed in a home with cats, small dogs, or other small or prey-like animals.

In dog interactions, Arlo has shown that he can socialize with female dogs, though his play style tends to be pushy and rude at times. He engages in chase play and mounting but is able to take breaks and redirect with appropriate guidance. Interactions with male dogs have been significantly more challenging. Arlo has displayed persistent mounting, pinning, and muzzle punching and has difficulty reading or responding to social cues from other dogs. He has shown poor social skills and would do best as the only dog in the home or potentially with a well-matched female dog under careful management.

Arlo can be fearful and nervous with certain types of handling, particularly around his head and neck. He is sensitive to prolonged or heavy handling and benefits from a patient, slow approach that allows him to build trust. Shelter staff have also observed leash and barrier reactivity toward other dogs, which appears to be frustration-based.

Arlo is an active dog who will need an experienced placement that understands his behavioral needs and is committed to helping him succeed. Outside of the shelter environment, with proper management, training, and realistic expectations, Arlo has the potential to thrive in the right home.

He appears healthy overall, and a full medical summary can be provided upon request.

Thank you,
