Happy Friday,
Bitcoin is at $62,556 and nobody is talking about the price. They are talking about access.
Three separate stories this week all point at the same uncomfortable question: what happens when the coins are still yours on paper, but you cannot move them, or someone else knows exactly where you live? Let’s get into it.
⚡ Why a Bitcoin proposal on the table right now would freeze 6.7 million BTC permanently
📈 How to hold real stocks and ETFs next to your crypto in one account

🧠 The weekly trivia, and this one has a $74 billion answer
Here is the part most holders have never checked. Roughly 34% of the Bitcoin supply sits in addresses that have already published their full public key on chain. Every time an old-style address spent from, it exposed itself. Today that is harmless. On the day a sufficiently powerful quantum machine exists, it is a key that has been sitting in a shop window for fifteen years.
The proposed fix is BIP-361, authored by Jameson Lopp and five co-authors and still sitting in draft. It runs in three phases: three years after activation, nothing new can be sent to legacy addresses. Two years after that, legacy signatures stop validating entirely. Anything that has not moved by then is frozen. Not stolen, not lost, frozen by consensus. Roughly 6.7 million BTC falls inside that perimeter, including about 1.1 million coins linked to Satoshi Nakamoto.

Bitcoin's Quantum Problem: Why 6.7 Million Coins Could Be Frozen Forever
5:09 PM · Aug 12, 2026 · 21 Views
No previous Bitcoin upgrade has ever invalidated existing transactions. This one would, and that is exactly why the reaction has been split down the middle. One camp reads it as network defence: leave those coins spendable and they become the prize for whoever builds the first working quantum computer, and the sell pressure that follows would take the price down with it. The other camp reads the same document as confiscation with extra steps, which cuts against the one promise Bitcoin was built on.
There is no activation timeline. BIP-361 also depends on BIP-360, which is still under review. So nothing is happening tomorrow. But Google published a formal plan in March to move its own infrastructure to post-quantum cryptography by 2029, and that number is starting to look less like science fiction and more like a deadline.
The practical takeaway: check what address type you are actually holding on. If your coins have never moved from a legacy address, you are in the affected set, and the fix is free. Move to a modern address format.

Two of this week’s biggest stories were not crypto stories. SPCX added roughly $530 billion in five sessions, and Terafab is a semiconductor story that reaches into mining hardware and miner equities. If your entire exposure to that theme is tokens, you are watching the second derivative of a move happening in equities.
XTB gives you real stocks and ETFs alongside your crypto exposure in one regulated account, with 0% commission on monthly volumes up to €100,000 and a platform that does not require a trading desk to operate.

Top 7 assets as of writing:
🔴 $BTC $62,556 | 24h -1.89% | 7d -3.75% | YTD -28.52%
🔴 $ETH $1,864 | 24h -1.37% | 7d -2.82% | YTD -37.17%
🟢 $BNB $602.81 | 24h -1.18% | 7d +1.80% | YTD -30.17%
🔴 $XRP $1.00 | 24h -0.41% | 7d -2.74% | YTD -45.63%

🟢 $HYPE $55.68 | 24h -3.92% | 7d -0.52% | YTD +118.97%
What stands out: the majors are grinding, not crashing. Bitcoin has given up 3.75% on the week and sits 28.5% down on the year, while XRP is the worst of the large caps at 45.6% down since January despite holding the one dollar line almost exactly.
The interesting money is elsewhere. HYPE is up 118.97% year to date, the only asset in the top ten with a triple-digit year, and TRX is the only other one in the green at +16.84%. Below the top ten, the privacy names are quietly doing their own thing: Zcash at $480.73 and Monero at $396.18, both far above where the majors’ year-to-date charts would suggest. Chainlink also put in the best seven-day run of the top fifteen at +6.71%.

🥶 Bitcoin’s Quantum Problem: Why 6.7 Million Coins Could Be Frozen Forever
A third of all Bitcoin sits in addresses a future quantum computer could crack. The proposed fix would lock those coins permanently. Here is the plan.
Today, Friday 14 August US retail sales, plus weekly BTC and ETH options expiry on Deribit at 08:00 UTC. Two volatility sources landing on the same session.
Monday 17 to Thursday 20 August Wyoming Blockchain Symposium in Jackson Hole. Not a market mover on its own, but it sets the tone a week before the Fed shows up in the same town.
Wednesday 19 August, 14:00 ET FOMC minutes from the 28 to 29 July meeting. That meeting produced a 9 to 3 hold with three regional Fed presidents dissenting in the same direction, the first three-way same-direction dissent since 2016. The minutes are where we find out how close that vote actually was.
Thursday 20 August CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee meets on crypto assets, AI and prediction markets. Notably, they are moving without waiting for CLARITY, which tells you something about how long the agencies expect that bill to take.
Friday 21 August Weekly BTC and ETH options expiry, landing two days after the minutes. Compounding risk on both dates.
Wednesday 26 August Second estimate of Q2 GDP (advance came in at 1.5% annualised, down from 2.1% in Q1) plus Nvidia’s fiscal Q2 earnings at 17:00 ET. The AI trade gets its report card, and given how SPCX and the miner-to-AI rotation have traded, crypto is downstream of that print.
Thursday 27 to Saturday 29 August Jackson Hole. The 2026 theme is “Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy,” which means digital payments, CBDCs and stablecoins are on the agenda at the most closely watched event in central banking. This is the one to circle.
Monday 31 August Revolut’s USDT deadline. Automatic conversion after this. If you are affected, act before the weekend before, not on the day.
Wednesday 16 September Next FOMC rate decision. Everything above feeds into it.

About 1.1 million BTC, worth roughly $74 billion at today’s price. The reason it is first in line is the address type. Satoshi mined in the era of pay-to-public-key addresses, which write the full public key directly onto the chain rather than a hash of it. That means there is nothing left to break except the elliptic curve maths itself. The oldest coins in existence are also the most exposed, and they have never moved once. 🥶
