Considering how dangerous calling 911 is for a manic or psychotic person, what should people do to help when someone with is having an episode and is actually in distress or danger? I once called 911 as a child because my neighbor was having what was probably a manic or psychotic episode and she was clearly very upset and trying to self harm. They sent a cop first, and his first question was if she was on drugs. Then finally the cop called paramedics, who were able to stabilize her enough that a family member drove her to the hospital. I realize now what a terrible position we were all in. I had no way of knowing if the family taking care of her had her best interest in mind, who dispatch would send, or if they would make things worse. I’m curious to know your thoughts on these situations and what bystanders can do to protect people going through mania or psychosis. Thanks for your time!
you can learn crisis de-escalation techniques yourself, if you're comfortable intervening in situations like this, and also maybe get emergency contacts from neighbors ahead of time, if you know them well enough to ask. I'm sure some followers have tips and resources for alternatives to 911 when people are in crisis, so I'll let them add anything they think is relevant!
