Academy Issues SciTech Awards Call For Submissions
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently opened submissions for the 2027 Scientific and Technical Awards. The deadline to submit is July 23 at 5 p.m. PT.
Through the Awards, the Academy honors the individuals and companies whose innovations have contributed in “significant and lasting ways” to motion pictures. Eligible submissions include devices, methods, formulas, discoveries and inventions of outstanding value to moviemaking, which will be evaluated by a committee of engineers, scientists and filmmakers.

Artlist Launches Content Hub
AI production platform Artlist has launched Artlist TV, a new content hub for AI-generated and hybrid productions. Available through the Artlist TV website at no cost to viewers, the platform will feature video productions such as trailers, TV series, commercials, animated shorts and narrative films.
The platform debuts with The Arc, Artlist’s first original episodic series built with Artlist Studio. Created in partnership with creator Simone Ferretti and directed by Darin Stewart, the narrative follows inmate Isaac Ward, who finds himself thrust into a deadly samurai-era battlefield .
Additional content at launch includes short film White Deer, created by Jonathan Vardi. Creators can submit original concepts or completed projects for consideration through the platform’s Submit My Story feature.
AI Investment
On June 4, Hallstone Ventures celebrated its initial portfolio investments in four companies investing in AI infrastructure: Waffle Video, ORBES, Rex and Wide World.
Hallstone Ventures reports that Waffle Video is building a “provenance-first” video data platform and mobile app aimed at delivering rights-cleared, annotated and custom video datasets for AI companies and enterprises; ORBES is building “cinema-grade” robots for space; REX is developing a “Human Identity Infrastructure” technology that authenticates humans in adversarial digital systems; and Wide Worlds, is a “fan creation and activation platform” for entertainment studios and consumer brands.
Hallstone Ventures Fund I closed in May exceeding its original $10 million target, the firm reported.
MovieLabs Releases Cloud Production Case Study
MovieLabs—the non-profit 501(c)(6) research and development joint venture founded by major Hollywood studios—has published a detailed case study found here about a cloud-based workflow for Universal Pictures’ film Love Hurts, which took inspiration from MovieLabs’ 2030 Vision documentation. This involved original camera file processing and storage, dailies, VFX plate pulls, trailer conform and finishing, feature conform, post finishing/color grading, and digital cinema mastering, partnering with AWS Company 3, Pixelogic, and other vendors.
MTI Acquires Mango New Edit
Hollywood-based post facility and software developer MTI Film is starting a new chapter with the acquisition of Mango New Edit, a provider of remote dailies and Avid editorial services, making MTI what senior vp Barbara Marshall described as a “true end-to-end creative partner — from the moment camera cards come off set, through editorial and VFX, all the way to final color.” Terms of the deal were not revealed.
Mango founder Stan Cassio will continue in a leadership capacity within the combined organization as senior vp of postproduction sales. “Joining this family means our clients immediately benefit from capabilities we could never have offered independently. MTI’s Cortex and DRS Nova software platforms, Flow Post Partners in Vancouver, and the global reach of MTI Remote are an exciting opportunity for us to continue advancing the state of the art,” he said in a statement.
