Thank you to Katherine May for having me on her podcast. // Do you need a must be nice seagull in your life?

Hello friends,

I finally decided to do it: launch an analog newsletter! Say hello to Creative Fuel Quarterly, a seasonal snail mail subscription.

I have been thinking about doing this for a very long time. You may remember a couple of years ago I sent out an experimental analog newsletter. This one:

Analog newsletter from three years ago.

The goal was to do more of those, but other things kept getting in the way. You know, like they do.

And let’s not forget about my original newsletter I made back in the 4th grade.

All the way from 1994.

I really enjoy writing a digital newsletter, and I will keep doing that. But in the past few months, I’ve found myself more and more in need of the tactile, textural world.

If I’m honest, I feel a deep sense of digital overload. I read fewer and fewer of the newsletters that land in my inbox right now. Not because I don’t want to hear what people have to say, but because I feel maxed on my capacity to consume more digital things. Based on my conversations with friends, I know that I am not alone. Plus, working on analog projects has way more of a draw than sending things out into the digital ether.

When I say “analog newsletter” I don’t just mean something that has been printed and mailed. For this first edition I wrote almost everything on a typewriter, and every page was made by collaging together handmade art. AKA: made with Artist Intelligence.

It is feeling more important than ever to make work that shows you’re human. The AI bots are not sending you handmade newsletters now are they?

It has been nice to have a project to work on with my hands, particularly as I’ve been spending a lot of time staring at a computer screen lately. I’m a little nervous to launch this, because it has meant an entirely new digital backend, and it’s a little bit of a “I hope this works!” situation.

But here’s the thing: in my experience, that’s how most good projects begin. You can’t know everything from the start. Sometimes you just have to dive in.

This first edition is devoted to encouraging you to have an analog summer. I am not going to show you pictures of it, because that would defeat the purpose. But here is a little sneak peek:

Yes I want an analog newsletter!

Creative Fuel Quarterly will be released every season, mailed out just after the solstice or equinox.

A zine-style newsletter, printed on a 11x17” piece of paper and folded into eights. The newsletter is designed to be hung as a poster on your wall after you’ve finished reading through. Consider it part newsletter, part art print, part creative prompt.

Subscriptions are $8 per quarter. This includes US shipping. International subscribers pay an additional $1 (plus you have to cross your fingers that the international mailing muses have our back). I’ll be mailing with a good ole USPS stamp, so there will be no tracking number.

The goal is for the newsletter to land in your mailbox early July—or sometime thereafter depending on the postal service.

yes please sign me up!

Paid subscribers, you’ll find a little discount code below too.

Here’s to more analog work this summer!

  • Grids! I like making these in my sketchbook with washi tape but you can draw them out too.

As always, this weekly digital newsletter is made possible thanks to paid subscribers, who help ensure keep almost everything I write and share here (both words and art) free and accessible.

I am incredibly grateful that you’re here and want to support my work. I want to extend a little discount as a thank you.
