I made a mistake today.
Nothing dramatic. Just enough for my brain to immediately whisper: How could you? What’s wrong with you.
Here’s the fascinating bit: neuroscience tells us our brains are prediction machines. They’re wired to spot errors and potential threats because, historically, mistakes could be costly.
The problem is that the brain rarely stops at the fact. It writes a story: I’m not good enough. I’m failing. People will judge me.
The mistake is real. The story is optional.
Next time you make one, pause and ask yourself:
What’s the fact… and what’s the story my brain is adding?
That tiny question creates just enough distance to respond with curiosity instead of shame. And that’s often where growth begins.
