A Week in Pictures

I highly recommend the Boone County Fairgrounds Campground in Boone, Iowa. It’s flat, has full hookups, is run by a friendly host, doesn’t cost much, and gives you spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

I was utterly charmed by the library in Boone, which had cake pans available for borrowing (an idea also employed by my friend Sarah Peterson at the library in Miles City) and this super-cool program. Art for the people!

My last night in Boone included a barrel-racing competition directly across the road from my campsite. No way I was missing that.

Mamie Doud Eisenhower spent only nine months—her first nine months—living in Boone, but she returned to it continually throughout her life. Her favorite uncle, Joel, lived in Boone, and she came to visit for his birthday every year, often bringing along Dwight. Boone holds her in tender regard, nearly 50 years after her death. I enjoyed visiting her birthplace museum. I also enjoyed ogling the 1962 Valiant she and the former president owned.

I was fifteen minutes from Ames, so I took a spin around the Iowa State campus and got this narrow view of the football field at Jack Trice Stadium.

One of my favorite additions (so far) to my rig. It was a must, really. The TV is directly across from here.

So, yeah, I saw it. It wasn’t no Buccee’s, I’ll just say that.

I love how my fake flowers include a not-yet-opened-nor-to-ever-open bud. I demand authenticity from my ersatz stuff.

I’ve gone from a quiet little spot in Iowa to a jam-packed, party-central campground in Illinois. Not complaining. Just contrasting. I’ll do my thing either which way.
