The Claude Code Feature That Eliminates Generic AI Output

Most AI output is forgettable.

Same tone. Same structure. Same generic advice you could find anywhere.

The problem isn’t the AI. It’s that we keep starting from zero every single time.

A skill is a reusable set of instructions: persona, context, and prompting - packaged into one file that Claude can use anywhere.

Think about what makes a great prompt:

Who is the AI? (A copywriter. A CMO. A senior developer.)

What context do they have? (Writing for a SaaS business. Releasing product docs. Handling customer service.)

Skills combine all of this into a single asset you install once and use forever.

Here’s why this matters: Instead of re-explaining your business, your voice, and your goals every time you start a chat, you tell Claude “use the growth lead skill” and it already knows everything.

The result is dramatically better output with dramatically less effort.

In Claude Web:
Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Add

You can create one from scratch, write the instructions directly, or upload a file. I prefer uploading because I can version control and reuse them.

In Claude Code:
Even easier. Create a .claude/skills/ folder and drop in markdown files. That’s it. Claude Code picks them up automatically (you may need to restart after adding new ones).

Here’s how I think about creating skills:

  • 10% is direction — you tell the AI what you want

  • 80% is the AI doing the work

  • 10% is you tweaking the output

The key insight: Find a skill that already works well and use it as a template. I used Claude’s own frontend-design skill as the basis for creating a “skill creator” skill. Meta? Yes. Effective? Absolutely.

You shouldn’t be writing out all this information from scratch anymore. Point the AI at something good and have it create what you need.

Install one skill today. Just one.

Pick whatever you do most often — email newsletters, product announcements, landing page copy — and create a skill for it. The compound effect of not re-explaining yourself every single time is massive.

Skills will likely become a universal standard (OpenAI is already working on adopting them). Get ahead of this now.
