Here is a fact that should be more widely known than it is.

The scientific community has largely settled the Darwin Wars — the century-long argument about whether evolution endorses competitive individualism or reveals cooperation as a primary biological force. The settlement is not tentative or contested. It has been building for fifty years across multiple independent scientific disciplines, and it converges on a conclusion that is almost the opposite of what the dominant cultural narrative still believes.

The dominant cultural narrative — shaped by Thomas Henry Huxley’s Victorian interpretation of Darwin, extended by Herbert Spencer’s social Darwinism, embedded in rational choice economics and popular evolutionary psychology — holds that competition is the primary driver of evolutionary success, that self-interest is the biological baseline, and that cooperation is a fragile cultural imposition on a naturally competitive substrate.

The science says otherwise.

Robert Axelrod’s 1984 book The Evolution of Cooperation brought the mathematics of game theory to bear on the question of how cooperation could evolve among self-interested agents. His computer tournaments — in which different strategies competed in iterated prisoner’s dilemma games — produced a result that surprised almost everyone who encountered it: the winning strategy, across a wide range of conditions, was not ruthless defection but something called Tit for Tat. Cooperate on the first move, then do whatever your partner did last time.

Cooperation was not just morally preferable. It was mathematically stable — the strategy that outperformed all others under conditions that are extremely common in the natural world and human social life.

Martin Nowak, one of the leading contemporary mathematical biologists, has spent a career demonstrating that cooperation is not merely stable but necessary — that the emergence of complexity in biological systems, from the first replicating molecules to the first cells to the first multicellular organisms, required cooperative transitions at each stage. His book SuperCooperators argues that cooperation is the third fundamental principle of evolution, alongside mutation and natural selection.

Lynn Margulis’s theory of endosymbiosis — the discovery that the eukaryotic cell originated through the cooperative merger of previously independent bacteria — is perhaps the most dramatic single finding. The origin of complex life is not a story of competition. It is a story of cooperation so deep that formerly independent organisms eventually became a single entity. Margulis fought for this finding for decades against a scientific establishment that resisted it with the energy of a paradigm defending its territory. She was right. The establishment eventually accepted it.

Frans de Waal’s decades of research on chimpanzee and bonobo behavior has shown that our closest evolutionary relatives are far more cooperative, empathic, and socially sophisticated than the Social Darwinist picture predicted. Chimpanzees share food, console distressed companions, reconcile after conflicts, and maintain the social bonds that hold their communities together through behaviors that can only be described as cooperative and empathic. The Age of Empathy is his most explicit statement of the argument that Kropotkin had made in Mutual Aid a century earlier.

Elinor Ostrom won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2009 for demonstrating that communities are capable of managing shared resources cooperatively and sustainably without either privatization or state control — that the Tragedy of the Commons, Garrett Hardin’s influential 1968 argument that shared resources would inevitably be destroyed by self-interest, was a theoretical prediction unsupported by the actual behavior of actual communities.

Science has moved. The question is: why hasn’t the culture?

The answer is not that the findings are too technical to communicate. De Waal is one of the most effective science communicators alive. Axelrod’s tournament results are genuinely accessible to any educated reader. Ostrom’s fieldwork is vivid and specific. The findings have been published in popular books, covered in major publications, and awarded the Nobel Prize.

The gap is maintained because the competitive framework serves entrenched interests. It justifies arrangements that benefit specific actors. It has been embedded in educational institutions, media narratives, and political ideologies, each with its own inertia and defenders. The people with the most power to shape the cultural narrative are, in many cases, the people who benefit most from the story that competition is natural and cooperation is naive.

This is not a conspiracy. It is the normal operation of a system that reproduces the conditions of its own existence by shaping what seems thinkable within it.

The cultural critic Mark Fisher called this Capitalist Realism — the production of a world in which alternatives to the competitive framework have not only been politically defeated but also made imaginatively unavailable. The gap between what the science shows and what the culture believes is Fisher’s Capitalist Realism operating at the level of scientific literacy.

Peter Kropotkin made the cooperative argument in 1902, based on field observations accumulated over five years in Siberia, with the rigor of a trained naturalist and the precision of a man who understood exactly what he was arguing against.

He was dismissed as a romantic whose science was sentiment. The competitive framework was too useful to allow a serious engagement with the evidence he had assembled.

Science has since assembled that evidence independently, in multiple disciplines, using methods Kropotkin could not have imagined. Axelrod didn’t cite Kropotkin. Nowak didn’t cite Kropotkin. Margulis didn’t cite Kropotkin. De Waal cited him occasionally but didn’t build on him directly. They arrived at Kropotkin’s conclusions from independent evidence, which is exactly the kind of convergence that distinguishes a genuine finding from an ideological projection.

The convergence is the evidence. The science has moved. The cooperative framework is not the naive alternative to the competitive mainstream. It is the mainstream, in the relevant scientific communities, that the cultural narrative has not yet caught up with.
