The first chapter of A Course in Miracles is titled The Meaning of Miracles and begins by listing 50 miracle principles that establish the foundation on which the Course’s thought system and teachings are based. These principles converge on a single, clear understanding that miracles are “expressions of love.”
This phrase appears seven times throughout the principles, establishing love as the fundamental nature of miraculous activity. For that reason, I’ll refer to that theme going forward as the Love Principle.
From a Coursian perspective, a miracle represents one person expressing love to another. It’s a tangible, transformative force that flows between human beings when barriers are removed and spirit is able to recognize its Self in others. The miracle worker becomes a conduit for this universal love, allowing it to flow naturally and effortlessly toward those who need it most.
“The miracle acknowledges everyone as your brother and mine (Jesus). It is a way of perceiving the universal mark of God.” ACIM T-1.1.40
This understanding can transform our approach to spiritual practice. Rather than focusing on external sources of enlightenment, we can open ourselves as channels for the love that already exists within us. This love isn’t something we create or manufacture, it’s our natural inheritance, the very essence of who we are beneath all the layers of fear and separation we’ve accumulated.
“The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.” ACIM T-Introduction
The Course tells us that “Love created me like itself.” ACIM L-67. Not as metaphor but as the Course’s description of our ultimate reality. We are expressions of divine love that have temporarily forgotten our true nature.
A possible slogan for the Love Principle might be “You are Love, Pass it On!
What makes love so transformative in the context of miracles is the recognition it carries. When we give a miracle, we see past the surface appearance of problems, limitations, and errors to recognize the inestimable worth and divine perfection that God created in the other person. This recognition honors their true spiritual identity and implicitly acknowledges the Creator who made them.
This loving perception has the power to heal because it reveals what is already true. The miracle receiver may see themselves as deeply flawed or lacking, but the miracle worker’s recognition of their wholeness and divine worth helps restore their awareness of their true nature. It is like turning on a bright lamp in a dark room to reveal that the true content offers no cause for fear.
The healing occurs not through fixing or changing anything, but through the simple act of seeing truly. When someone recognizes and honors the holiness within us, it awakens our own awareness of that holiness and affirms our true identity as spirit.
“Miracles praise God through you. They praise Him by honouring His creations, affirming their perfection. They heal because they deny body-identification and affirm spirit-identification.” ACIM T-1.1.29
One of the most beautiful aspects of miracles as expressions of love is their mutual benefit. Unlike physical transactions where giving something away means losing it, miracles operate according to spiritual laws where both giver and receiver gain. The miracle worker experiences increased love, strength, and clarity while the receiver is healed and restored.
“Miracles are teaching devices for demonstrating it is as blessed to give as to receive. They simultaneously increase the strength of the giver and supply strength to the receiver.” ACIM T-1.1.16
Each expression of love increases the total amount of love available in the world. The miracle worker is able to draw on an inexhaustible source so rather than deplete themselves by giving, they actually strengthen their connection to the universal love that is their true source.
The ripple effects of love-based miracles extend far beyond the immediate interaction between giver and receiver. Each miracle contributes to what the Course describes as an “interlocking chain of forgiveness” that will eventually encompass everyone. The person who receives a miracle is transformed in ways that affect all their subsequent relationships and interactions.
Moreover, miracles operate outside the normal constraints of space and time. A single expression of love can heal people at a distance, influence past and future events, and contribute to the ultimate goal of reuniting all minds in divine love. In this way, the miracle worker serves as an essential link in this cosmic chain of healing, understanding that even seemingly small acts of love have lasting impacts.
Understanding miracles as expressions of love can change how we approach each day. Rather than focusing on our own material advancement, we are called to make each day about giving love. This means looking for opportunities to express genuine care, compassion, and recognition of worth in every interaction.
Think of all the opportunities available to us on a daily basis: the girl who scans your groceries, the man who holds the elevator door, the teenager who tries to sell you fruitcake, the coworker who greets you in the morning, and even the guy who cuts you off in traffic when driving home. They are each an invitation to recognize the common creation we all share in God.
Inviting Guidance From Without
The Love Principle emphasizes that this requires divine guidance. We cannot simply decide when and how to give miracles based on our own preferences or prejudices. Instead, we must remain open-minded and allow ourselves to be directed to those who are ready to receive and use the love we offer.
“The Holy Spirit is the mechanism of miracles. He recognises both God’s creations and your illusions. He separates the true from the false by His ability to perceive totally rather than selectively.” ACIM T-I.1.38
This approach to daily life requires a fundamental shift in priority from getting to giving, from self-improvement to service, from personal advancement to universal healing. It asks us to see our lives as opportunities to channel love rather than accumulate experiences, possessions or achievements for ourselves.
Perhaps most importantly, understanding miracles as expressions of love reveals the ultimate purpose of spiritual practice. We are not working toward some distant goal of self-enlightenment or personal perfection. We are learning to become effective channels for the healing power of love that the world desperately needs.
Every genuine expression of love contributes to the collapse of time and the acceleration of universal awakening. When we understand our role as miracle workers in this context, even the smallest acts of kindness take on cosmic significance. We are not just being nice or helpful; we are participating in the very purpose for which time exists.
This understanding transforms A Course in Miracles from a path of individual spiritual development into a training manual for becoming an agent of universal healing. The Course is not ultimately about achieving personal peace or happiness, though these naturally result from miracle-giving. It is about learning to serve the divine plan for awakening through the simple but profound practice of expressing love.
In embracing this understanding, we discover that the power to perform miracles is not some special ability reserved for saints or mystics. It is the birthright of every person who is willing to open their heart and allow love to flow through them to a world in desperate need of healing. The Love Principle, properly understood, is an invitation to step into this magnificent role and discover the joy that comes from serving Love itself.
