Dance When You're Broken Open: Eclipse Week

I’m recording this on August 6th, completely exhausted, and I want to say that plainly because the astrology of this week reflects exactly that. You may be feeling it too.

I do want to briefly address something I spoke about on the astro-politics video with Cathy. An astrologer I have long admired and considered a teacher used a racial slur on a public podcast. He apologized, but the apology has been seen by many — myself included — as lacking full accountability for the impact of his words. I’m not saying I’m perfect. I’ve been called out before for things I was not fully aware of, and I’ve tried to change. I can still ask for accountability while sending compassion to everyone involved, including him. The Astro Twins put it well: real friends tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. And Eris — who appears in this week’s chart — is nothing if not that.

The astrology community is being forced through its own Saturn square Black Moon Lilith moment. The orgs aren’t working anymore. New alliances are forming. This happens everywhere as the old structures fall. I won’t dwell on it, but I needed to say it once, in writing.

Now. The eclipse is on Wednesday. Hold on.

I’ve had an image behind me this week — Humpty Dumpty. And I want to say why.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again.

The South Node eclipse is the great fall of kings. People at the pinnacle — overblown egos, power-over leaders, figures of authority who have been fawning over rather than truly held accountable — are going to fall from their walls. Not just in politics. In every community, as the patriarchal paradigm dies.

But here’s the thing I love: Humpty Dumpty is an egg. And the Sabian symbol for the Aquarius Full Moon we had on July 29th was a child being born out of an egg. You can’t put the egg back together — and we wouldn’t want to. The egg is cracking open, and what’s inside is being born.

The eclipse is the crack.

Mars has been out of bounds since August 3rd — I didn’t mention this last week and I should have. Mars is out of bounds until August 28th. This is adding to the intensity, the erratic energy, the things that happen beyond the pale. Mars out of bounds doesn’t care about norms. It does what it wants.

The Moon is also out of bounds at the start of the week — through Sunday and Monday. Two out-of-bounds bodies, an eclipse on Wednesday, and almost no earth in the sky. This week will feel dizzying. Grounding is not optional. It’s the medicine.

There is almost no earth. Only Chiron in Taurus, retrograde, heading back to Aries to finish what he needs to finish. He is still the root of the basket. Everything else is fire, air, and water. Get your feet on the earth. Wear your grounding stones.

And one more thing: asteroid Ariadne is conjunct Jupiter in Leo this week — which is why I added her. Because the Dancer card arrived. I’ll say more at the end.

We open with I Am Reborn — and then two reversed cards that speak to the pressure of this eclipse week. And then the Dancer closes it, despite everything. Because of everything. More at the end.

We open the week with the Moon still in Gemini, heading into a remarkable pileup.

At 1:27am Eastern, the Moon meets Mars at 28° Gemini. At 1:42am, the Moon meets Ceres. And at 2:06pm Eastern, Mars meets Ceres — all at 28° Gemini, directly opposing the Galactic Center at 28° Sagittarius.

The Galactic Center is what Philip Sedgwick calls the cosmic defragger — it emits waves of new information, higher-order truth, downloads that defragment old patterns in the hard drive of consciousness. Think of your computer grinding to a halt, then clearing everything out, and beginning again differently. That’s the energy of the Moon, Mars, and Ceres all piling up at this point, with the people and our emotions behind it.

Mars and Ceres are both guardians — both historically associated with the grain, the earth, what feeds us. Together at 28° Gemini: we need a complete clear-out. We need to speak up about our needs. What action are we going to take? The answer is still forming. But the awareness is landing.

Meanwhile, Venus in Libra is making an ongoing air grand trine — first to Juno, now to Sedna (adapt or transform), moving toward a kite with Neptune in Aries as the focal point. The kite says: dissolve the might-is-right energy. Move toward balance, harmony, justice. This is radical change in air signs — the changing of minds, beliefs, perceptions.

The Moon moves into Cancer at 3:45am Eastern — out of bounds, emotional, heightened. The Moon and Mars are both out of bounds. This is very erratic, very beyond-the-conventional energy. The Moon in her own sign makes a supportive aspect to Chiron — those wounds around core values, ethics, what we genuinely stand for. Then trines Hecate (the way-shower, the torchbearer) and trines Haumea — the whole rebirth energy, the regeneratrix at the handle of the basket, saying: this is what we’re doing. We’re doing this.

The Moon then squares Venus in Libra — Venus still the only major planet that has crossed the South Node drain. She’s leading. She’s in her home sign. She is bringing the scales into balance.

And the Moon meets Asteroid Lilith — talk to the hand.

Mercury enters Leo — and I want to say something about this. At its highest, Mercury in Leo is speaking from the heart with courage. It is the bold, radiant voice that says what needs to be said. But Mercury in Leo can also puncture egos — words that hit hard, that cut through the performance to something uncomfortable. We are seeing both this week.

Mars and Ceres meet at 28° Gemini — the degree reduces to 10, which reduces to 1. New beginnings. And 2 and 8: the divine feminine and the infinity loop of balance. With all this new information, you will start to see it happening. People are saying the orgs aren’t working anymore, we need new alliances, this community needs to change — that’s very Gemini. You’ll feel it in your own life too.

Mercury in Leo opposes Juno — our contracts with each other, with ourselves, with our memberships and communities. What are those contracts actually worth? What do we feel about them? What do we need from them?

Mercury in Leo squares Chiron at 0° Taurus — at the zero degrees of fixed signs, both bridge-walkers, both between-worlds energies. Mercury carries messages; Chiron bridges inner and outer, wound and medicine. Together at the threshold: get down to being fully human. Meaningful work. Strong values. Service-oriented. No more power-over, no more me-first as a default mode. And yes, that’s different from self-care first. Self-care first is about filling your cup so you can pour. Power-over is a whole different thing.

The Cancer Moon (out of bounds) squares Saturn — moving away from each other, but the question lingers: Saturn retrograde is revisiting the old rules. The Moon says: is it time to birth some new ones?

Venus squares Asteroid Lilith — the divine feminine in both its forms pressing against each other. The scales of justice and the talk-to-the-hand. And here’s something worth noting: Venus is acting as a handle at this point, one of two handles in a big configuration — the other being Haumea. Both are associated with balance, justice, regeneration. And Haumea is approximately where Venus will be in the middle of her retrograde in October. Venus is foreshadowing her own journey.

Venus trines Pluto — looking at the shadow of the communities and institutions we’re part of. Then Venus exactly opposes Neptune — love meeting higher love. Dissolve the dominator culture. The might-is-right energy. Dissolve it. This is happening in Libra and Aries: balance facing the new beginning.

Mars at the anaretic 29° Cancer aspects the Nodes — out of bounds Mars at the final degree, the liminal degree where everything is about to change, pressing on the Nodes at 29° Leo/Aquarius. Change is coming. Huge change. What action are you taking to be part of it?

The Cancer Moon squares Eris — Eris as tough medicine. She’s the truth-teller who doesn’t care if you’re comfortable. Friends tell you what you need to hear. Acquaintances tell you what you want to hear. Which one is Eris? All three. And sometimes what you need to hear comes from within too.

Mercury squares Haumea — thinking through the heart toward regeneration. You have to do the dismemberment before the rememberment. You cannot put the egg back together the old way. Think this through. What is actually being reborn here?

The day before the eclipse.

Mercury sextiles Sedna — an opportunity to adapt. Adapt to the new world, the new alliances, the shifting climate of everything. We have no choice but to adapt right now.

Neptune squares Asteroid Lilith — they’re moving away from each other, but the message: dissolve the dominator culture. The might-is-right energy. Go back and rethink the rules.

At 4:30am Eastern, Mars enters Cancer — and is immediately in the sign of home, birth, family, the mother. Mars is out of bounds. Mars in Cancer can be deeply protective — the fierce guardian of the nest. But it can also be over-self-protective: the deflect, deny, defend pattern (look up DARBO if you don’t know the term) — when we’re so defended that no accountability can get in. Watch for this in yourself and in others over the coming weeks. Mars in Cancer at its highest is the fierce protector of what genuinely nourishes.

At 4:38am Eastern, the Moon enters Leo — and the Moon is back in bounds by the time of the eclipse. This is a good thing. The Moon in Leo is the people in the big red shiny balloon — easily pricked ego, but also the bouncy, generous red heart. Which one will it be? That’s up to us.

At 9:41am Eastern, Moon conjuncts Mercury in Leo — heart and mind meeting in the sign of the heart. What do I really think about all of this? What is actually true for me, in my heart? This is the question to sit with on the day before the eclipse.

Juno retrogrades back into Capricorn — back into the sign of institutions, structures, man-made laws. All institutions — astrology organisations included, and everything else. The contracts with these structures are being re-examined. What needs to change? What is no longer viable?

The Moon opposes Pluto (the shadow, the buried treasure) and trines Neptune — visualize threads between all the hearts, everywhere. We are all connected. Even when we disagree. Even when accountability is being demanded. We are all connected.

The Moon sextiles Venus and Uranus — sitting at the midpoint, activating radical change, light bulbs, the occasional shock that forces the change. Then the Moon meets Jupiter and Hygeia — big, Leo-sized emotions, and the question: what do we need, for genuine preventative, holistic health? What do we need to truly live from the heart?

Mercury opposes Pluto — join the Moon in looking at shadow, in transforming it. Then Mercury trines Neptune — remember interconnectedness. Remember that we are all made of this. Venus perfects her trine to Uranus — revolutionary, radical, changing everything. Good.

Ceres enters Cancer at 10:54am Eastern — joining Mars at 0° Cancer, that world point, that alpha and omega. Mars and Ceres together: what are we going to do about our genuine physical needs? About scarcity? About food and material security? Take action. That’s what Mars says. What action can you take?

The Total Solar Eclipse at 20° Leo is exact at 1:36pm Eastern. A South Node eclipse — a releasing, a resetting, a falling of eggs from walls. The egg cracks. What’s inside begins to emerge.

The Moon is back in bounds by this point. The Moon is in Leo with Jupiter, Mercury, and Hygeia. Then, right after the eclipse, the Moon trines Pallas Athena — the wise justice warrior showing us the direction to plant seeds in. The Moon opposes Chariklo — the cosmic doula, Spider Grandmother, holding space for the new story we are writing. The Moon trines Eris — and yes, table-turning is part of the new story. Not necessarily everyone turning the same tables. But each of us flipping what needs to be flipped, within and without.

Mercury sextiles Uranus — everything is changing. Feel it within yourself. It doesn’t always feel good immediately. It feels real.

The Moon in Leo, still full from the eclipse energy, crosses the South Node — Humpty Dumpty has his great fall. People falling from heights they thought were permanent. Overblown egos meeting the drain. Leaders who thought themselves untouchable discovering that accountability has been waiting.

At 6:18am Eastern, the Moon enters Virgo — and immediately begins to make supportive aspects to the Cancer cluster: Mars, Ceres, Asteroid Lilith. The Virgo Moon says: what can we build from here? What practical action follows the fall? It’s not fully clear yet. But the Moon sextiles Mars and sextiles Ceres — there’s something being assembled, even if we can’t see its full shape.

Mars trines Hecate — the out-of-bounds guardian trining the torchbearer in Pisces. The way forward is through love and interconnectedness. Through remembering that we are all one big family being reborn in a different way. That doesn’t cancel accountability. It’s where accountability leads.

Mercury sextiles Venus — fire and air together now, Leo and Libra. Creating new ideas, new plans, balance, harmony. The heart speaking to the scales.

Pallas Athena stations retrograde — and I find this interesting. All the personal planets in the Leo-and-beyond cluster are moving forward: Mercury is done with its retrograde, Jupiter is not yet retrograding. But the energies that stayed behind in Aries — Saturn, Chiron, Eris (already retrograde), Neptune — are mostly retrograde. Now Pallas Athena joins them. Going back to create a strategy from power-within rather than power-over. If we are working with it rather than against it, this is the work: building the internal strategy for a life that doesn’t dominate.

Ceres aspects Chiron — how do we bring the healing? How do we make sure our emotional needs, and our collective family’s needs, are genuinely met?

Mars out of bounds trines Haumea — and Mars’s traditional home includes Scorpio, so this is Mars in water (Cancer) trining Haumea in Scorpio, the sign of Mars’s co-rulership. Regenerative, deep, fierce. Mars also trines Hecate — the guardian and the way-shower in flowing conversation. The path is letting the water erode what no longer holds. Trust the flow. Be reborn from within the water.

The rebirth energy keeps coming up because it keeps being the truth.

The Sun in Leo makes a fire grand trine to Pallas Athena — burning off old things, yes. But also: the light of the heart in direct conversation with wise strategy, with creative intelligence, with justice-seeking. The fire is purposeful. Let it burn what needs to go.

Mercury conjuncts Jupiter in Leo — big ahas, big ideas, big news. The messenger and the expander, together in the sign of the heart. What you come to understand today may be significantly larger than what you were ready to hold yesterday.

And I’ll only say this quietly: this conjunction lands on a degree very significant in a certain prominent person’s chart, in their house of hidden things. Time will tell.

At 10:19am Eastern, the Moon enters Libra — and shortly after, something shifts. The Moon moves more than 30° from the Sun. Now the action phase begins to build on the eclipse energy. Things will start to shift. Hugely.

The Libra Moon squares Ceres and Mars (both in Cancer), trines Pluto, opposes Neptune, trines Uranus, squares Asteroid Lilith — activating the whole basket, the whole cradle. The regeneration. The necessary change. The radical shift that’s been building for years and is now, undeniably, here.

Early on August 16th, the Moon will meet Venus — both having crossed the South Node. Two feminine bodies leading the way into what comes next.

The Sun is in the Mars decan of Leo by now — driven to act. We are being driven to act. Each of us has our own tables to flip, our own actions to take, our own part in the birth of whatever this becomes.

Nine of Torches (Wands) — I Am Reborn:

This is the card that surprised me — in the good direction.

“Something in your life is nearing an important completion. You have pushed your boundaries beyond normal limits, and have used energies you never realized you had. You have stood up to challenges and responsibilities. You have listened and learned. You may be weary. But you are still standing.

Let us acknowledge just how much you have lived through, and you can now accept that all is going well. This will continue, but there is one more push on this journey that stands before us. Exhaustion may be an issue. Burnout. But trust that a great reserve of strength is within you to call upon. Keep on going. Your inner fire will help you bring things to finality. Believe in yourself.”

One more push. You’ve come this far. The eclipse is the push.

Ace of Seeds (Pentacles), reversed:

Upright, the Ace of Seeds is the very beginning of manifestation — early stages, the seed before the plant. Reversed, in eclipse week: the fear of scarcity, the feeling of missed opportunity, the sense of oh, it’s too hard. We are in genuinely hard times. But this reversed card is about the fear of that hardness more than the hardness itself. And it is an Earth card — its own prescription is right in its suit. Ground yourself. Replenish through the earth so you can keep going.

The Fall (Tower), reversed:

The Tower is forced change — the structure that surrounds your inner or outer life becoming stagnant, decayed, unviable. Things being changed for you when you haven’t changed them yourself.

Reversed in this position: some stagnation, some procrastination, some disconnection from Source. Nothing will be the same again. This is the literal form of the Fall — and here’s how I read it: the first fall, in the old story, was the illusion of separation from the divine. Now we are falling back — back to our full humanness, back to remembering that we are connected to everything. It doesn’t always feel gentle. But it is a falling home.

The Dancer (Witch Oracle):

Ariadne is in the chart conjunct Jupiter in Leo this week. Ariadne — who found her thread through the labyrinth, who was abandoned on Delos, who became a goddess, who danced. The Dancer arrived because Ariadne is there.

“Now is the time to celebrate. If you have a particular achievement or success, you are invited to take the time to enjoy it rather than hurrying on toward the next goal. Let yourself indulge the joy you have created for yourself.

If you pull this card when there is no specific celebratory event, the Dancer is here to remind you that in any given moment, you can dance for sovereignty or hustle for approval. The dance is birthed from knowing your deservedness and embodying your inherent worth. The hustle is birthed from the too-much-not-enough syndrome, which insists we conform, fit in, earn, prove, or produce in order to be worthy, valued, or loved.

Shed the hustle. It never produced anything for you except stress and pressure. Look at the trees — they don’t earn the sunshine. Look at the flowers — they don’t hustle to deserve rain and soil. A witch recognizes the hum in her veins, the rhythm of her heart and breath, affirming that the dance lives within her.

Dance when you’re broken open. Dance when you’re perfectly free.”

This card arrived in eclipse week — the darkest of dark moons, the fixed pressure point, the exhaustion — and said: dance anyway. Not as spiritual bypass. Not instead of the hard work. The dance IS the work. The sovereignty dance, the one that comes from knowing you deserve to be here, is the opposite of the hustle that has kept so many of us small.

Ariadne is conjunct Jupiter in Leo. The invitation is literal. Turn some music on.

Mars and Moon both out of bounds. The pileup at 28° Gemini opposing the galactic center — a cosmic defrag. Mercury in Leo speaking from the heart with courage. Venus opposing Neptune, dissolving the old might-is-right energy. Mars into Cancer, out of bounds, fiercely protective. Ceres into Cancer at the world point. The eclipse cracking the egg. Mercury conjunct Jupiter with news to be revealed. Pallas Athena stationing retrograde to create the new strategy. The Moon activating the whole basket as it enters Libra. And Ariadne, the dancer, in the chart.

You may be weary. You are still standing. One more push.

The egg is cracking. What’s inside is being born.
