Tonight, the Lion becomes the Virgin. The modern astrologer Dane Rudhyar has a curious take on this place where Leo and Virgo meet, the place our sun now sits. It’s a Sphinx, he says: lion body, maiden head. The Lion is, in a sense, solo—king of the jungle—symbolically able to “absorb or lord it over all lesser creatures.” The Virgin is alone, too, says Rudhyar. But it’s a different variety of aloneness. “The Virgin is alone — and expectant. She expects the performance of a Mystery which will destroy both her aloneness and her Virginity.” Rudhyar goes on: “She may stare, Sphinxlike, into the night of the desert; but in her heart and in her womb she knows that He will come. That coming will make of the desert a fruitful valley.” And who is this mysterious “He?” More on that in a minute. The Virgin, presiding over our digestive systems, digests and sorts through Leo’s immense fire. For the next month, we’re all Virgins. The Virgin inquires. Asks. Stares. Like Gemini, the other Mercury-ruled zodiacal sign: she wants to know….WHY?! Virgo is an earth sign—holding space and taking us out of summer, nearer the ground than the Gemini twins—but still, but still—according to Rudhyar, when we move from Leo into Virgo: “space overcomes fire”, “the Many overcome the One” and “Relationship triumphs over self-radiation.” The Virgo waits for a question to disarm her, to dare to de-virginize her.
