Easy and Simple Are Not The Same Thing. Corporate Confused You On Purpose.

I want to talk about two words that most people use interchangeably.

Easy. And simple.

They are not the same thing. Not even close. And the confusion is leaving your highest potential on the table.

Simple means the path is clear. The steps are defined. The action is straightforward. There is no mystery about what needs to happen.

Easy means it requires little to no effort. Little to no resistance. Little to no discomfort. You can do it without much cost to yourself.

Simple and easy can exist together. But they often do not. And the most important things in life are almost always one without the other.

The most important things you will ever do fall into this category. Simple. And not easy at all.

Let me give you my own example because I live this every single day.

I go to the gym every morning before work. I get up between 3:45 and 4 am. I do my pre-gym routine. I get there, and I work whatever muscle group is on the schedule. I keep the same split for at least a year. Mostly the same exercises. The same structure. The same sequence repeated over and over until it is so familiar I could do it in my sleep.

On paper it is about as simple as it gets. Show up. Move. Go home. Work in my prison.

But there is nothing easy about it.

Getting up at 3:45 am before the sun has even considered rising is not easy. Putting everything you have into a physical workout before most people have had their first cup of coffee is not easy. Staying regulated, staying motivated, showing up on the days when your body is tired, and your mind is loud and every comfortable thing in the world is telling you to stay in bed. Not easy.

But simple? Completely. The plan is clear. The action is defined. I do not have to think about what to do. I just have to do it.

The plan itself is simple. The execution is not easy. But it will get easier over time.

That is the distinction. Simple is the architecture. Easy is never part of the deal. And sometimes it feels like it is harder to separate than a Siamese twin.

Now here is where corporate enters the picture and makes everything worse.

Corporate does not trust simple. Simple looks like laziness to a system that mistakes complexity for intelligence. If something is simple, it must not be sophisticated enough. If something is working on repeat, it must not be innovative enough. So they layer on top of it. They add initiatives and frameworks and new priorities and rebranded versions of the same thing until the original simple thing is completely buried underneath the complexity they piled on top of it.

They reinvent the wheel when the wheel was functioning perfectly well as a wheel.

And then they call it strategy. Or thought leadership.

I have watched this happen more times than I can count. Something is working. The path is clear. The results are coming. And instead of letting the simple thing keep doing its simple thing, someone in a room you were not invited to decides it needs to be more sophisticated. More innovative. More aligned with the new direction. And suddenly the thing that was working is gone, and you are starting over with something complicated that nobody fully understands yet.

That is not progress. That is corporate’s discomfort with simplicity cosplaying as leadership.

But here is what I need you to hear. And this is the part that matters most.

Do not bring that mindset home with you. Never ever ever.

Corporate can overcomplicate its own processes all it wants. That is corporate’s problem. But when it comes to your personal goals, your exit plan, your side project, your personal development, the thing you are building outside the walls, the rules are completely different.

Simplicity is your greatest asset. Not your weakness. Whatever you do, never take a page out of corporate’s book and overcomplicate it. You will end up just chasing your tail like a puppy. Literally running in circles, feeling exhausted, with nothing to show for it.

Do the simple thing. On repeat. Over and over and over again. Do not add layers because it does not feel fancy enough. Fuck fancy. Who cares. Do not reinvent the approach because it feels too basic. Do not overcomplicate it because the simplicity makes you feel like you are not doing enough.

The gym taught me this. The plan is simple. Show up. Move. Go home. The simplicity is not the problem. The simplicity is the whole point. Because when the plan is simple, the only variable is execution. And execution is where the real work lives.

Is it glamorous? No.

Is it exciting every single day? Absolutely not.

Is it fun to do the same thing on repeat for a year or more? Sometimes. And sometimes it is just Tuesday at 4 am, and you are tired, and you go anyway.

That is exactly why it is not easy.

Simple and easy are not the same thing. Simple is available to everyone. Easy is a myth that corporate sold you to make the complicated feel necessary and to justify their inability to plan, communicate, and execute.

Choose simple. Do it on repeat. Trust the repetition.

The wheel does not need to be reinvented.

It just needs to keep turning.

Plot the escape.
