Burning the Candle at Both Ends

This last month or so has been action packed, and I’ve definitely been burning the candle at both ends. The glorious sunshine has made things spectacular but also unbearably hot at times. The unit I work from is essentially a metal box with no insulation to keep heat in, or in this case, out. To survive the heatwave I tried to get in as early as possible, then work from home in the afternoons.

That was all well and good, but it didn’t help me get ahead of the game before the kids broke up from school, which was a busy time in itself, what with all the leavers’ thank-you gifts for their teachers. Now I’m desperately trying to get a whole lot of stock made for the Big Church Festival at the end of August. Very exciting, and possibly the biggest event we’ve done since the Royal Cornwall Show some years ago.

I can’t blame the weather entirely for not having loads of stock premade. I also keep having ideas I think would be amazing for the festival, and then I just have to make them. That’s not a bad thing in itself. It’s great to feel inspired.

The dry weather has also fed that inspiration, with all the opportunities to get outside during the school holidays. I get a day’s work done while the kids are mostly still asleep and slowly readying themselves for the day. By the time I get back, they’re ready for a bike ride, a wild swim, or most recently, blackberry picking.

The main task I set myself today was to finish a flyer design and send it to print, to help spread awareness of our website. It’s been trickier than I’d hoped, and it’s still not done. I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed with extra children in the house today. I’d hoped that working from home would let me look after them and finish the flyer, but instead I’ve had to go into work to finish off a wholesale order, clean up a broken glass, wipe up spills, and write this. I don’t help myself by deciding to make doughnuts with the children, and I’ve currently got a roast in the oven because it’s everyone’s favourite.

I'm going to go eat my roast and reset. I may have to cancel my social plans for tonight and just knuckle down, so I can have a beautiful, carefree weekend ahead to enjoy. especially with my middle son's birthday to celebrate too.
