I’ll never forget what the son of the slain victim said after witnessing the first execution by nitrogen gas: “it’s something I don’t ever want to see again.’” Turns out, watching someone getting tortured to death is a grotesque experience, even for those who support an execution.

Perhaps attention over a failed state killing will bring sorely needed attention to state killing more broadly.
Tomorrow, Arizona will execute Aaron Gunches, who was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of his girlfriend’s ex-husband in 2002. I’m the law professor that tried to stop it.
