When Phil Aaberg left the Bay Area for a quieter life in Montana, we were sad, but he took his brilliance with him where ever he performed.

I met him when he was an artist on Windham Hill Records. His brilliance was unmistakable. The first time I was in the studio with him, I was blown over by his complete control of his instrument - the piano. I had never heard such dynamic range. From the softest pianissimos to the loudest fortes, no one matched his level of skill and creativity.

Phil became one of my first call session players. Whether accompanying a pop singer-songwriter or a jazz artist, Phil knew exactly what to play and how. One jazz session had two pianists invited to play. You’d think the same mic technique could be used on the same day for the piano, but it was there I realized that’s not true. Great players attack a piano differently. It was impossible to keep the same mic distance from the piano when someone followed Phil.

There was another memorable moment when Phil hit the low end of the piano with such force that the fundamental tone from the strings disappeared. It was like there was no bottom end. Another lesson learned. We actually had to overdub low notes played with Phil using a softer touch to get the bottom end back.

Above all, he was a musician through and through. Phil, you will be missed but never forgotten. You’re music will live on.
