The problem is that it is almost impossible for modern firefighting equipment to get there in time.
The agencies doing the hardest work in wildfire response are chronically under-resourced, spread thin across multiple incidents, and dependent on aircraft and ground crews that take time to mobilize. During peak fire season, red-flag conditions mean a single spark can blow into a thousand-acre fire within hours. The gap between ignition and first response is often the difference between a contained incident and a community-level disaster.
That gap is exactly what Stuart Landesberg is building Seneca to close.
I spent a day in the field with Stu and his team, and I watched as they set a Sonoma field on fire. With a press of a button on a tablet, I was able to put it out with their autonomous drone system. The system is built for exactly the high-risk, low-resource moments where fire agencies need options most: it deploys with just one or two operators, can get on scene fast, and can run a sustained suppression effort for 30 to 40 minutes while ground crews mobilize or handle other incidents.
