Maria Cain · Around My Table with Maria Cain

Hey y’all, happy Sunday! I am writing this from my brother (Sam) and his girlfriend (Anna)’s apartment in New York while my two Millies (my mom and daughter) sleep in the other room. This week’s newsletter will be a little different as I have no capacity to think ahead to next week’s meals.

My mom, Millie and I left Richmond at 7am on-the-dot Friday and arrived in New York City at 2pm on-the-dot. I had been fretting so much about the travel and traffic and little Millie’s experience in the car, and it truly could not have been easier. Extremely grateful for that and hopeful we have a similar experience on the way home!

After the easy drive, we enjoyed an amazing arrival and afternoon bopping around the Upper West Side. Little Millie was in heaven playing with and showing off for Sam and Anna. I don’t think anything makes her happier than a room full of loved ones with all eyes on her. We had a delicious and celebratory dinner at Osteria Academia to celebrate Anna’s birthday and headed back to home base for much needed sleep. Millie did have a fully warranted melt down just before bed, which made me feel very guilty for keeping her up late after no nap, but it was all worth it.

Successful travel days like this make me feel like superwoman. I know all-to-well that they’re not all like this, but when it happens, I definitely take a moment to be proud of myself and my mom and my sweet little Millie for powering through a long day with big smiles.

Tomorrow is equally busy with brunch and a trip to the Museum of Natural History and more bopping. So much to do and truly not enough time, but we’re savoring every minute!

Wishing you an amazing Sunday! Thank you for supporting Consider it Done.

I am so excited to share with y’all that I am 18 weeks pregnant! Baby Hooe is due February 26th, 2026, and we are beyond grateful for a new sibling for Millie and a so-far uneventful pregnancy. Coming out of the first trimester haze of extreme fatigue and pesky nausea is amazing, and I feel energized and confident. I do still experience waves of anxiety that are stronger than I remember with Millie, likely due to my prior losses and just desperately wanting to know everything is OK and baby is healthy. That part of early pregnancy is incredibly challenging, the swirl of doubt and worry and not knowing. I am comforted now that I can feel lil baby moving every once in a while, which reminds me they’re cozy and growing in there.

Millie is very excited to be a big sister, and I can’t wait to watch that happen. She switches between wanting a baby sister and baby brother, and I love that it’s going to be a surprise for all 3 of us.

It was just under 1 year ago that I had my first miscarriage. I think back to that pain and despair and feel so much empathy for that version of myself. Even when I was my most broken, I knew somewhere deep down that it would come together in some way, and I’d have another baby. I was angry for having to wait and even more angry and confused after our second miscarriage, but I experienced lots of growth along the way that I know makes me a better mother to Millie and this baby.

All of this to say, that if you’re in the middle of feeling like what you want will never come, I can relate to your pain and fear and am so sorry you’re going through it. If it’s helpful to talk to someone, please know that I’m here.

Thank you all for your consistent support and encouragement. I am grateful for the space to share what I want to put out there.
