After moving through the initial heaviness and giving myself full permission to feel it all, something unexpected emerged: a lightness of being.
From that space, my natural playfulness began to bubble back to the surface.
🌿 Not long after my diagnosis, a friend suggested Crazy Sexy Cancer by Kris Carr and invited me to do a 30-day juice detox. I opened the invitation to other friends, and together we created a little healing pod.
🌿 I scheduled my surgery on Halloween and loved seeing the Care Bears, Witches, Cats, and even Wonder Woman strolling through the hospital halls. I told my mom to keep her eyes peeled for unicorns. When she came back from lunch, her eyes sparkled with childlike glee—she’d seen two unicorns walk into a restaurant. I shared the story in my Facebook group, and soon unicorn magic showed up everywhere—sprinkled into my mailbox and my heart.
🌿 I began to see myself not just receiving care, but bringing light and love into every hospital space I entered.
🌿 I asked friends to join me in a virtual healing circle. At the time I was scheduled to be in surgery, they meditated, spent time in nature, or did something that lit them up. It became a profound experience for all of us, inspired by The Power of Eight by Lynne McTaggart.
🌿 One dear friend accompanied me to my doctor appointments. Afterward, we always went out for lunch and did something fun—shopping, walking, laughing. It turned something potentially draining into something life-giving.
JOY wasn’t a reward at the end of healing—but part of the medicine itself. Even in the density of cancer, delight found a way in.
What are some ways you can sprinkle more joy into your experience? I’d love to hear, if you are open to share!
