Science, and mathematics in particular, is often seen as beautiful. Not only for the visual forms produced by its formulas (such as fractals) but also for the elegance, clarity, and inevitability with which it describes reality.
Another form of beauty, which is rarely emphasized, is the syntactic side of formulas. The syntax or typographical form of a formula is independent of its meaning or its truth. Patterns, spacing, rhythm, hierarchy, minimalism, abundance, closure... formulas can be an endless source of aesthetic joy. The realisation that something profound is being said – albeit thoroughly incomprehensible, almost mystical1 – adds to the experience.
In Form over Function, 30 mathematical works have been carefully selected from scientific publications. Each work has a title based on the associations upon seeing it for the first time. Four examples:

From a similar conceptual view, we drain a WLFR project from the past. WfNL consists of a series of ten readymades accompanied by infrasound, highlighting the Dutch landscape as a minimal, geometric anomaly in the vastness of the sea. Ten selected maps from the Dutch National Mapping Agency (het Kadaster) show isolated extremities of Dutch water works as sparse abstract form. The maps will be available for purchase from our Boutique in the further future. The infrasonic soundscape that convoys the maps, below hearing levels as land below water, is made available as a free download for the first time — as well as a bonus album in different scales, from infra- to ultrasonic.

WLFR’s works were on display at WLFRHQ, by that time in Utrecht, 16-18 November 2001. Chances are considerable you’ll have missed that.
Peter Manuel’s works will be on display at Weespers aan de Wand (22-25 May, synagoge + city hall Weesp) and Kunstkerk Muiden (10-12, 17-19, 24-26 July, Nicolaaskerk Muiden).
In closing, one more bit of exciting news. We have been training Art Assistance Alpacas. The AAA will identify bad art by spitting at it. It might also, ironically, spit at good art.
