I was looking at my hardcover bookshelf late last year, admiring some of the well crafted hardcovers ComixTribe has produced over the years… and there was a noticeable hole there.
You might say a shark-mouth sized hole.
You see, a few years back, when we were far more focused on getting our books to pop in the direct market through Diamond distribution, we released a critically acclaimed series called CHUM from acclaimed writer Ryan K Lindsay & superstar artist Sami Kivelä.
Unlike anything we’ve done before, but the same awesome quality storytelling our fans expect from us, the CHUM series was told as a simple three issue gritty crime story that earned critical acclaim. We eventually collected CHUM as softcover trade, which sold out and has been out of print for some time… but due to competing priorities, bandwidth issues, and financial resource constraints, we never launched CHUM as a book on Kickstarter and we never made the premium hard cover version of the series, even though we always talked about wanting to do it.
And to be perfectly honest… that’s always bugged me! One of the best parts of being a publisher is the chance to push the envelope and try to make a book that really stands out on the shelves.
We’ve worked with Ryan on two of our most stunning hardcovers in the past, for SHE: AT THE TOWER OF ALL THAT IS KNOWN and A FISTFUL OF PAIN. The fact that CHUM never got the same treatment… kind of criminal.
But hey, although time only moves in one direction and you can’t change the past… there’s no time like the present to right a wrong.
And that’s why we launched a stunning new die-cut oversized hardcover version of CHUM that we think new and longtime fans alike will want to sink their teeth into.
Here’s the gist of what CHUM is all about:
CHUM is a surf noir crime tale for mature readers set on a sun-bleached island where money, drugs, and desire pull everyone toward the same inevitable bloody tide.
Summer Stanwyck is trapped.
She tends bar on the island she grew up on, the local cop is about to become her ex-husband, and she’s wasting time screwing the local reefer kingpin.
But when a bag full of cash and drugs appears, she sees a way out... and anyone who gets in her way is shark bait.

At last, ComixTribe is launching a limited edition definitive hardcover edition of this surf noir masterpiece, featuring a stunning composite die-cut cover with art from Justin Greenwood (The Fuse, Stumptown) and Kivelä.
We’re thrilled to see that our campaign is already off to a great initial start, with over 100 day one backers and more than 3/4 funded in our first handful of hours.
We’ll need at least another 50 or so backers to get this project off the ground, so if you’re in the market for another AMAZING hardcover from the ComixTribe crew…
