Move over, Kal-El! Supergirl is taking over this summer. As temperatures reach new highs, so does Kara Zor-El as the Woman of Tomorrow is celebrating the new season with the release of her own movie in theaters and some good comics.
If you like the Supergirl version of the DCU, DC Comics has released several editions of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a comic miniseries by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, which inspired the film (the comic itself being inspired by True Grit).
However, this is one interpretation of Supergirl. This hot summer is as good as any to discover the many facets of the Maiden of Might, starting with the one-shot Summer of Supergirl Special #1 featuring stories from Sophie Campbell, Mark Waid, and Gail Simone, with art by Belén Ortega, Cian Tormey, and Emma Kubert.
If you like stories following Kara in space amid a minor identity crisis, you could also read her first adventure at the beginning of All In, Supergirl: Universe End, written by Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Skylar Patridge.
And then, Kara has recently returned to Midvale for her own ongoing series, written by Sophie Campbell, which could not be more different in tone. Mostly a modernised Silver Age comic, this is for you if you like colourful, silly comics with pets!
Also recently released is Supergirl: The World, a new hardcover anthology spotlighting the Maiden of Might through stories created by writers and artists from fifteen countries across the globe. Meanwhile, Supergirl: Survive, a limited series from the Elseworlds universe by Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan with art by Rod Reis, is being published right now.
There are many more Supergirl stories of all genres, including Peter David’s cult series featuring Linda Danvers, not Kara! You just have to choose your perfect Supergirl comic to read.
