SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON: A WRAP UP REPORT
After attending San Diego Comic-Con for a decade as a professional, this year marked a first. I was finally accepted as an exhibitor, representing Collectors in Small Press. Although I’m no stranger to selling at conventions, SDCC is its own massive beast and several cuts above any other show.
And how did I do? I’m happy to report that I covered my expenses (booth, table and gas), which is more than I was expecting considering the inflated costs associated with SDCC. This year, I didn’t have to spend money on food. Breakfast and dinner was sandwiches, fruit and protein bars brought from home. Dinner was covered at all the industry events in the evening that served us free food. SCORE!
The big item at my booth was my SDCC Exclusive Preview of Untold Tales of Collectors. This #0 issue was limited to only 100 copies and my goal was to sell out (Hey! all the other publisher do it, so why not me?!), but I didn’t quite make it. I sold about 75% and now made the remaining copies available to everyone on my website. Check out the link at the bottom to order one for yourself.
A FEW HIGHLIGHTS
I did something for the first time at this show. I cranked out a bunch of $10 sketch cards throughout the show and happily sold almost every one. Affordable art for the win!
A person at my booth was admiring my 100% AI Free enamel pin and, with a straight face, asked me if I used AI to design it. HUH?!
Spike of Spike and Mike’s Animation Festival stopped by my booth! If you don’t know who Spike and Mike are, google it. It’s literally the animation festival that launched Mike Judge’s career. Spike had a canvas that he was collecting sketches and signatures on to later be displayed at an upcoming festival and he asked me to add to it. So it now includes a sketch of Kristen as well as my signature.
Overall, my small press exhibitor experience was a success and I can’t wait to do it again next year. There’s lots of room for improvement and I’m already thinking about what I can do better next year. Until then, it’s time to get back to finishing up Untold Tales of Collectors!
And speaking of Untold Tales of Collectors, a small amount of copies of the limited SDCC exclusive preview are still available and ready for you to order! Didn’t make it to SDCC? Click below and grab one before they’re gone!
