I’m devastated and outraged that I even have to write this post.
As you’ve already seen, Donald Trump and the GOP have been letting ICE run rampant throughout communities all across the country. And the result?
Parents afraid to drive their kids to school.
Small-business owners afraid to open their doors.
Families packing up and leaving in the middle of the night because they don’t feel safe anymore.
It’s no mystery why, either.
Traumatizing Children
The other day, a young boy spoke before Congress. He was detained at a routine immigration hearing with his mother. In an instant, he went from playing soccer as a senior in high school to being tossed around between ICE detention facilities.
He described being put in solitary confinement for two days for no reason. He was subjected to strip searches and made to wear a tracking bracelet. He was even fed spoiled food that made him sick, threatened with violence, and cut off from communicating with his mother or brother.
For two months, this was that young man’s reality. And as a father myself, I cannot even imagine the heartbreak and fear his mother was going through at the hands of Trump’s heartless ICE agents.
No child belongs in solitary confinement. And every single family deserves answers, transparency, and accountability. Period.
Upending Lifesaving Research
This out-of-control agenda doesn’t stop at detaining children. It’s also actively harming our state’s economy, our universities, and our health care systems.
Texas should be helping world-renowned institutions like MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston recruit the absolute best cancer researchers on the planet. Instead, Gov. Greg Abbott is putting partisan politics ahead of scientific breakthroughs, medical treatments, and human lives.
Nearly six months ago, Abbott restricted public institutions from utilizing the H-1B visa program. That’s stopped nearly 280 foreign-born researchers at MD Anderson alone from exploring why tumors resist treatment, testing groundbreaking new therapies, and utilizing artificial intelligence to analyze cell tissue.
Cancer does not care where a researcher was born, and Texas families facing a diagnosis deserve every possible chance at a cure.
Killing Our Friends and Neighbors
From the hospital beds in cancer research centers to public protests and daily work commutes, people are dying because of Trump’s increasingly aggressive ICE policies. And now, we’re seeing the tragic consequences unfold right in our own backyard.
Just last month, they claimed yet another life – a long-term resident and father in Houston.
His death is one of dozens of others that have transpired in confrontations with immigration enforcement and in unkempt ICE detention centers. They’ve occupied American cities. They’ve detained and abused non-citizens & citizens alike. And they’re outright killing innocent people.
The Solution: Abolish ICE
Abusing children in detention. Tearing apart Texas families. Blocking lifesaving cancer research.
These have been the hallmarks of Republicans’ out-of-control immigration agenda. And they’ve proven they have zero intention of reigning it in.
It’s up to us to take a stand. We must abolish ICE and rebuild a humane, accountable immigration enforcement system that reflects our values.
If elected to Congress this November to represent TX-33, I will vote to abolish ICE and dismantle for-profit detention centers once and for all. But I need to know that you’re standing right beside me in this fight.
