Bitcoin has staged a sharp recovery, climbing above $77,000 on August 21, its highest level since May. The rally is changing the picture for corporate Bitcoin treasuries, but a recent Glassnode snapshot shows just how different their positions can be depending on when they bought Bitcoin.

When Bitcoin was around $68,328, Glassnode data showed that 22 of 28 Bitcoin treasury companies were below the acquisition cost of their BTC holdings. The gap between the strongest and weakest treasuries was significant.

Block led the companies in the Glassnode dataset, with its Bitcoin holdings 98.9% above cost basis. Tesla followed at 44.6%, while Bitcoin Group SE stood at 44.1%. Hut 8 was 24.2% above cost, while Riot Platforms and CleanSpark were only slightly above their acquisition levels at 3.3% and 0.7%.

On the other side, OrangeBTC was 43.1% below its cost basis, followed by Bullish at 42.8% and Empery Digital at 42.1%. Bitcoin Standard Treasury Company, Trump Media & Technology Group and KindlyMD were also more than 41% below their acquisition costs. GameStop was 37.3% below.

But Bitcoin’s latest rally has begun to change that equation.

One of the clearest examples is Strategy, the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holder. The company currently holds 840,447 BTC at an average acquisition price of $75,385 per Bitcoin, according to its official Bitcoin ledger.

As BTC moved above $77,000, Strategy’s holdings returned to unrealized profit, showing how quickly a treasury can move from red to green when Bitcoin crosses its average acquisition price.

This also highlights why the Glassnode data matters. Being below cost basis does not automatically mean a company is financially distressed or has realized a loss. It simply means the current market value of its Bitcoin holdings is below its acquisition cost.

Bitcoin’s recovery is giving underwater treasury companies some breathing room, but the bigger question is whether the rally can continue.

For investors, the important metrics are no longer simply how much Bitcoin a company owns. Its average acquisition price, distance from breakeven and ability to withstand further volatility can be equally important.

The Glassnode snapshot showed a corporate Bitcoin market divided by entry price. Bitcoin’s move above $77,000 is now testing whether that gap can begin to close.
