Valdemar agreed to settle down in the hotel for another night, and I was eager to explore the local museum. I knew he’d enjoy it as well, so we made a plan to head that way after breakfast the next morning.

Unfortunately, the weather hadn’t been on our side. It began to rain as we got out of bed, and soon, it was windy enough to warrant weather advisories for wind gusts. I was let down by the cancellation of plans, but it was better than being out on the road. Deciding to stay in the hotel another night had been a good decision either way.

I left the bathroom after my shower to find Valdemar reclining on the bed and watching TV. “The weather isn’t going to let up anytime soon, is it?” I asked.

He sighed and turned it off. “Unfortunately not, but we’ve got our own ways of staying occupied, don’t we?” He smiled.

I bit my lip. I knew he’d meant it innocently, but my body had other ideas. I ignored it and decided that it would be a good day to rest. I couldn’t keep going like I was, even if the pain had disappeared that morning. Where I’d usually had a bit of an ache, I was miraculously pain-free. It didn’t mean I was in the clear, though. There was still the possibility of my uterus having a fit during an orgasm.

The depression I’d tried to stave off crept up on me again. I was afraid, and the fear had become much worse than before. Even though there were clear signs of improvement, that kind of pain left a scar. I could fool around and be involved with a lot of heavy teasing, or even give Valdemar pleasure, but the moment the urge to chase an orgasm came to me, my body would have an anxiety response and I’d have to back down no matter what I felt like.

“Are you alright?” Valdemar asked. He sat forward and patted the bed. “Sit with me, talk to me.”

I hadn’t realized it was so plainly visible. “Not really, no.” I crawled onto the mattress and sat beside him with my legs curled to the side. “It’s contradictory to the way I’ve been acting, but I’m now terrified of having an orgasm.”

“That’s understandable,” he said sympathetically. “You’ve been experiencing pain any time you’re aroused for a little while, so it would make sense that you’d develop that fear.” He pulled me into a hug, and I wrapped my arms around him. “But it’s important to remember; you’ve been improving. The pain has been improving. That’s a sign that it may be coming to an end.”

“I know,” I said as I squeezed him tight. “But when you’ve experienced pain like that — such severe pain — it just remains with you like an echo, or a taunt even. ‘Remember what happened the last time you tried to get off? Remember the agony?’”

I remembered it all too well. It was the day after Valdemar had touched me for the first time. I’d been alone in my dorm because David had gone to visit his girlfriend for a date night, and my body lit up when I remembered the previous evening. I’d laid in bed and started to touch myself, only for a sudden excruciating pain to cause me to freeze. I couldn’t move. Thankfully, it’d surged for less than a minute before it started to ease back.

I’d gone to the doctor immediately only to be told what I now know. Despite knowing it was most likely temporary, that hadn’t completely eased my fears. And now, I feared I would start having panic attacks just like I nearly did after Valdemar and I messed around on the bed yesterday.

“It’s unfair, I know,” Valdemar said and kissed my forehead. “How is the pain today?”

“It’s… gone, I think,” I said. “But that doesn’t mean an orgasm wouldn’t still make it spike.” I focused on my body and searched for any inkling of pain. “I don’t know. I don’t know when it will be safe to test it.”

“Why don’t you give it a few more days?” Valdemar said. “Then, if you’re still pain-free, and if you want to test your body’s limits, we can go slow. Of course, we can wait longer than that.”

I chuckled. “You really think I can behave for longer than a few days?”

He returned the humor. “It’s a bit of an ask, I’ll admit, but I believe in you.”

“Getting cheeky now?” I kissed him before leaving the bed. “I’d better get some breakfast before staying in bed any longer with you tempts me.”

Valdemar chuckled and stood. “I’ll join you. Just for company, of course. I’ll… eat later.”

We headed down the hall to the elevators, and then stepped into the one that arrived. Once the door closed, the light flickered.

Panic enveloped me. “Open the door.”

“It’s okay,” Valdemar said. “It’s perfectly safe.”

Old fears of elevators crept into my mind, and I imagined the many-feet drop that would occur if the power went out. It was a false belief, of course. That wouldn’t happen. I couldn’t convince myself of it though. “Let’s just take the stairs.”

“Do you feel well enough to do that?” he asked.

“Yes. Yes, absolutely, just open—“

The elevator went dark. Everything went silent. Pushing the button to open the doors did nothing. “Fuck. Oh, fuck we’re trapped in here.”

“It’s okay, I promise, love.” Valdemar wrapped his arms around me. “Nothing bad will happen. You’re safe. Think of it as a little delay until they get the power back, nothing more.”

“We’re… we’re not going to fall, are we?”

“No, darling, we’re not.” He kissed my head. “Is there anything I can do to help ease your mind? Is that your only fear, or is it claustrophobia?”

“Both, honestly.” I closed my eyes and took some calming breaths. “You’re sure we’re safe?”

“Yes, perfectly safe. And you’re already doing the best thing you can do; breathe. Just take a few deep breaths. And I’m here with you. You’re not alone and you’re perfectly safe.”

I tried the deep breathing again, and although it only helped a little, having Valdemar’s arms around me helped more. He wasn’t afraid, he was calm. So it would be okay. I was just being a huge, anxious baby about it.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

Valdemar interrupted me before I could speak further. “Don’t be sorry. What you’re experiencing is a very common fear, and I can understand why it exists. But, rest assured, it’s only a fear. Nothing more.” He lifted my chin. I couldn’t really see him, but I wondered if he could see me. “We’ve been here for a few minutes now and nothing bad has happened. If it was going to turn dangerous, it would have by now.”

“Right, that makes sense,” I said. The longer we were in the situation, the more my anxiety started to ease. “Okay, we’re okay.”

“Exactly,” Valdemar said happily. “Would a kiss help ease your nerves?”

“I’m not sure,” I said truthfully. “We can try, although I can’t really see you.” I reached up to feel for his mouth, and my hands moved along his neck to his chin, and then to his lips. “Can you see me?”

“Yes, I can.” His lips curved into a smile. “A benefit of vampirism, certainly.”

“I probably look ridiculous right now,” I laughed nervously. I followed the path of my fingers and kissed him. “Found you.”

I wrapped my arms around his shoulders as he reclaimed my lips, and his hands rested on my back. The fear kept my arousal mostly in check as things remained tame and slow, but before long, he’d grown more eager. It was enough to fully push the fear aside as I welcomed his desire, and I pressed our bodies together as I became lost in him again.

I hummed with pleasure and pulled back to tease him. “Valdemar, are you the impatient one this time?”

“I apologize,” he chuckled. “Yesterday was a bit… well… intense.”

“I was going to ask about that.” My hand left his neck and trailed down his body. “Don’t you get frustrated, ever? You know, sexually.”

“Not frustrated,” he said. “The desire may linger a bit longer than usual…” He grabbed my hand as it squeezed between his legs. “Darling, the power could come back on any second.”

“Then we stop.”

He chuckled and let go. “But it’s not fair to you, to always be left wanting.”

“It’s something I’m getting used to,” I said. “And it’s okay; getting to touch you makes me happy. It gives me a taste of what I’m craving. I want to.”

“Until the power comes on,” Valdemar said.

“Until the power comes on.” I massaged between his legs as he grew aroused. “I love the way you feel in my hands, the way your body comes alive when I touch you. Even with the pain, it feels good for me too.”

Valdemar sighed with pleasure. “How’s the pain right now?”

Even though I was burning alive with desire, I realized the pain hadn’t come. I paused. “It’s not there. I’m not hurting. Not even a little bit.”

“Truly?” He slipped a hand through my hair as I continued. “And you’re aroused?”

If my underwear was any indication, yes. “Very. Do you think…” Anxiety crept up like a faint echo, but it was mixed with excitement. Maybe… “I usually feel something by now. Even if it’s small.”

He stifled a breathy moan as my hand moved faster. “Darling, you’re going to…”

“Make you come?” I said mischievously.

“Eventually,” he managed after another quiet sound of bliss.

“Do you want to, like this?” I asked. “We’d have to go back to the room then, I imagine.”

He grabbed my hand and took a shuddering breath. “Later, love.” He laughed in a way that caused a shock of lust to shoot straight south.

Fuck the anxiety. I didn’t want to wait a few days to see how it would go. Valdemar was safe and he would stop no matter how deep into things we got if I needed him to. Even now, while my body was begging for him, the pain hadn’t come. Maybe it would be possible.

“Let’s go back to the room when the power comes on,” I said. “It’s not like you can go downstairs now, anyway.”

“No, I suppose not.” He took a deep breath. “But you need to eat eventually. And breakfast downstairs is only available for so many—“

I placed a finger over his lips. “I can eat later. If the weather calms down, I’ll just call and order something.” I’d eaten a big dinner the night before, thanks to Valdemar insisting I stuff myself silly. I’d be fine for another few hours.

“Alright,” he said. “But as soon as possible, you should get something in you.”

I chuckled. “Oh, I agree. I totally agree. And I’ve already got what I want in me right here.”

Valdemar sighed hopelessly. “Are you sure?”

The lights flickered, and the hotel came back to life.

I squinted and looked around, and then into Valdemar’s eyes. “Honestly, I don’t know. But I want to try. I know you’ll stop if I ask you to stop.”

“Absolutely, without question,” he said, smiling. He tapped the button to open the doors since we hadn’t moved from the fourth floor. “After you. I’ll follow your lead.”
