One of the better routes in football is dagger out of 3x1. The dagger concept, dig and post is run by the #2 and #3 WR with the outside WR running some type of clear concept by the #1 WR.
The beauty of this concept is you can run it out of 3x1 or motion to it like Minnesota did in 25 under Greg Harbaugh.
This route is effective because you have a really stressful situation for the CB and Alley defender. The route is great because it has answers vs any coverage.
Minnesota runs it out of 11P and 12 P. The routes don’t change, just who is running them.

Vs Cover 3
For example, the defense below is playing cover 3 and it puts the CB in a really difficult situation. Does he stay on the vertical by #1 or jump the dig route. If he jumps the dig too early the vertical by the TE is open.
The Read for the QB.
Sneak a peak to the post and read the alley defender. Dig to the shallow coming across. In this case you have the alley defender jump the crossing route so he hits the dig.

In the 2nd clip they run the same route but run it with richochet motion out of 12P. The TE motions outside to #1 and again it is a really hard route to defend. The CB is playing divider concept and hangs on the post route which the safety has to take and it again opens the dig window. The alley defender hangs on the vertical by #1 and expands which opens up the dig. They also had the crosser as well based off their read but again their trying to sneak a peak to the post, middle of the field closed so not an option so work
post-dig-shallow off the alley defender.
The #2 in the photo gets leverage on the alley defender so throw him the football.

The dagger out of 3x1 is an easy concept to teach and you can get to the route with different types of motion. It is very hard to defend and has answers vs different coverages.
