Silicon Motion Technology Corporation [SIMO] is an American-Taiwanese company that sells controllers for NAND flash.
In computing, there are two main types of memory. The most common is DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory), which allows for fast data processing. The other is NAND (short for Not And), where data can be stored even when a device’s power is switched off.
Controllers are basically the brains inside a flash drive that manage the transfer of data between a memory chip and a device.
According to one research report from Dataintelo, the NAND flash memory controller market was worth $4.8bn in 2025. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.7% between 2026 and 2034 to a valuation of $10.2bn.[1]
Silicon Motion was named in the report as one the NAND flash memory market leaders.
The big driving force behind the NAND flash market’s current boom is the buildout of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and data centres. Enterprises and hyperscalers are snapping up solid-state drives (SSDs), which use NAND memory chips, to handle AI training and inference.
While SSDs are desired for their power efficiency and durability, high bandwidth memory (HBM) is preferred for its ability to store data close to processors to solve AI data bottlenecks. HBM yields higher selling prices and bigger gross margins than SSDs and it is for this reason that some manufacturers have refocused their capacity from SSD to HBM. This has caused a shortage of SSDs — and NAND flash memory in general — which has, in turn, pushed up prices.
According to Nelson Duann, Silicon Motion’s Senior Vice President of Client and Automotive Storage Business, the price increases have led to retail demand for SSDs almost disappearing. Nevertheless, many of the SSDs being sold to module makers –companies that assemble NAND flash drives – are ending up in PCs anyway.
“The reason is that [PC] OEMs cannot obtain enough NAND directly from memory manufacturers, so they are increasingly sourcing SSDs from module makers instead,” Duann told Tom’s Hardware on the sidelines of Computex in Taipei, Taiwan in June.[2]
“OEM demand has become much stronger, and module makers are now supplying a significant portion of their production directly to PC manufacturers.”
Duann added that while growth in the low-end consumer market has weakened, this has been offset by positive trends in the high-end market, “which is why our controller revenue continues to grow”.
When we covered Silicon Motion in a Foresight deep dive in March, we flagged an overreliance on consumer electronic devices. “For investors, the risk-reward profile of Silicon Motion largely depends on how quickly the company can shift its revenue mix towards AI and enterprise storage,” we wrote.[3]
The company’s latest results, reported on 30 July, indicate that it is making considerable headway towards reducing that reliance.
“Our shift from a consumer-focused NAND flash controller maker to a diversified leader in controllers and storage solutions – from AI infrastructure to the edge – is accelerating rapidly,” said Silicon Motion CEO Wallace Kou in the Q2 2026 earnings release.
Revenue surged 127% year-on-year in Q2 to $451m, up 32% from Q1,[4] which itself had seen revenue grow 105% y/y to $342m.[5]
Silicon Motion’s SSD controller segment, its core business, saw sales rise 50-55% from Q2 2025 and 5-10% from Q1 2026. Sales of eMMC+UFS controllers, another type of NAND flash storage, rose 95-100% y/y and 15-20% sequentially. Its Ferri and boot drive solutions segment reported a 1,690-1,695% increase in sales from the year-ago quarter and a 110-115% rise from the previous quarter.
The eye-popping jump in the third of the segments is down to a change in the way Silicon Motion reports its financials. Q1 2026 was the first period where the company disclosed it as a primary product category – some of the revenue was previously disclosed under ‘SSD solutions’.
The Ferri products (FerriSSD, Ferri-eMMC and Ferri-UFS) are controllers and NAND flash combined into standalone packages. They are targeted at automotive, industrial and enterprise customers looking for a turnkey solution rather than something that they have to assemble themselves.
Ferri’s family of products accounted for 30% of revenue in the last quarter, up from just a slim 4% share in Q2 2025. Kou said on the most recent earnings call that the company is “just getting started … We expect new customer design wins in both automotive and AI infrastructure to drive strong growth for the future.”[6]
Demand for Ferri has been boosted by NAND suppliers making automotive a lower priority. Duann told Tom’s Hardware: “Ferri is one of the few products that can still ensure supply, so we benefited both from higher NAND average selling prices and from having inventory available to serve customers.”
NAND suppliers are expected to continue allocating more of their manufacturing output to the data centre market. Duann said that he expects the situation to remain the same for the rest of 2026 and, based on conversations he has had with NAND suppliers, potentially worsen in 2027.
To take advantage of opportunities in the AI infrastructure market, Silicon Motion unveiled MonTitan SSD Reference Design Kit for AI Infrastructure on 10 August. In layman’s terms, it is a platform that enables enterprises to build SSDs designed specifically for AI servers, data centres and agentic AI workloads.[7]
In our deep dive we highlighted how MonTitan products are expected to contribute 5-10% of revenue in 2026. The company reaffirmed this target on the Q2 earnings call.
For the current quarter ending 30 September, total revenue is guided to be $519m-541m, up 15-20% sequentially. Growth is expected to be powered by Ferri and MonTitan products.
The AI story has helped to fuel a 180.92% rally in the Silicon Motion share price since the start of the year through 21 August, while it has run up 253.29% in the past 12 months.
To get a better understanding of whether SIMO stock could be overvalued, here is how its fundamentals compare to those of Microchip Technology [MCHP] and Marvell Technology [MRVL].
Microchip’s controllers and memory products are just a small part of its broader portfolio. Marvell operates across the whole AI infrastructure ecosystem, designing chips for AI accelerators, networking hardware and hyperscale data centre connectivity.
SIMO could be considered the cheapest of the three on forward earnings. Whether the stock is undervalued or overvalued depends on whether one thinks the potential future growth has been priced in already or not. There is also the question of whether the current growth rate is sustainable. For instance, if the memory supercycle suddenly unwinds, then the forward-looking metrics will likely skyrocket.
At the time of writing, SIMO stock has 11 ‘buy’ ratings and one ‘overweight’ rating, according to Wall Street Journal data. This is compared to 10 ‘buy’ ratings when we covered the stock in March.[8]
The average price target of $369.70 implies a significant upside of 43.1% from the most recent closing price of $258.36. This suggests that analysts think there is plenty of room left for SIMO stock to run, assuming that the AI story remains intact.
Silicon Motion is demonstrating that it no longer has to rely on revenue from SSDs for consumer electronic devices. It is pushing deeper into the enterprise and AI infrastructure markets with Ferri and MonTitan.
However, given the run the Silicon Motion share price has been on in 2026, investors should be cautious. SIMO’s bull case relies on the memory supercycle continuing.
