WHAT HAS THIS TO DO OF GOD?
My friend Margaret receives fools
with astute love and
keen generosity,
and breaks bread with
the destitute in her town.
She forages for perennial greens
in remnants of a garden she used to tend,
and marvels at neglected glory
in the afterlife of vegetables.
She wears long skirts
and layers of colours,
and always totes a heavy backpack
whose contents have saved
many situations.
When asked “What has this to do of God?”
She answers “Everything.”
While great thinkers speculate
on the universe’s birth and size,
and whose Golden Rule works best,
Margaret knows
that gardens are more than food
and foolish people make us wise
and cats are sometimes needed for living at all.
She sits in the silence
between this world’s rage
and this world’s poignant beauty,
then from that place,
sums up all theologies:
“there’s something going on out there.”
