College Football Thoughts

Some last minute preseason college football thoughts.

• Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy at LSU but now he’s sent them a cease and desist order to prevent the Tigers from using his NIL. This spat stems from LSU issuing Daniels number 5 to cornerback DK Pickett. That number is not retired but hasn’t been issued since Daniels won the Heisman. This is not a great beginning for the Lane Kiffin era.

• The Protect College Sports Act vote has been pushed until after the August Senate vacation. A vote has been guaranteed for September 14th.

• The Big 10 voted to expand travel rosters for league games to 80 players. This better reflects no more redshirts. The limit was 74 players.

• While many will agree that Jayden Daniels should be more concerned with the Commanders and not his old number with LSU and take the Tigers in this argument - many other fans around the country will side with Daniels because they don’t like LSU or Lane Kiffin.

• Amendments such as Senator Ashley Moody’s to exception allowing existing Power 4 conference schools to move to another Power conference without penalty or having to wait has been added. The bill was already 171 pages long - perhaps the five week recess was needed just to read the damn thing.

• If I were in the Senate I’d add an amendment that any FBS team that does not record a win before the Protect College Sports Act gets voted on is relegated to FBS. That amendment would never be added but it would be amusing.

• If there is a recruiting battle for a top black QB and LSU is involved you can be sure the recruit will be told of how Lane Kiffin lied to Jayden Daniels and about giving away number 5. You can almost count on this happening. This is the new Brian Kelly saying “family” with a fake accent.

• President Trump has come out solidly in support of the Protect College Sports Act.

• So ready for college football I rewatched Netflix’s SEC: Any Given Saturday series. They should bring that series back. So many story lines to follow. Make it happen.
