Defining Truth

Many concepts such as intelligence, truth, knowledge, learning, and consciousness are often treated as independent ideas. They can instead be understood as consequences of a small set of foundational definitions.

The framework begins by recognizing two complementary domains.

The first is concrete. It consists of experience itself, the only thing directly present to a system.

The second is abstract. It consists of models constructed from experience. Models allow a system to reason, predict, explain, and solve problems.

Truth belongs only to the abstract domain. Experience is simply experienced. It is neither true nor false. Only models of experience can correspond, or fail to correspond, to reality.

(Note, these are just initial thoughts aided by back-and-forth with AI, refining and chipping away at definitions and such, but need to next formally model them in code, and they are probably in several ways not 100% complete yet, need some more clarity/refinement work, but I’ll get to that in the coming days/weeks/months, thanks 👍).

Everything begins with experience.

Experience is the only thing directly available to a system. Everything else is an abstraction constructed from it.

As experience unfolds, distinctions become apparent.

  • Experience = the occurrence of subjective phenomena.

  • Difference = any distinguishable aspect of experience.

  • Information = distinguishable structure within experience.

  • Pattern = recurring information.

  • Entity = a persistent pattern within experience.

  • Property = an aspect of an entity that can vary.

  • Relation = a connection between entities or properties.

From these abstractions comes state.

  • State = the complete configuration of an entity’s properties and relations at an instant.

  • Transition = a change from one state to another.

  • Path = an ordered sequence of transitions.

From sufficiently persistent patterns, systems infer an external world.

  • Reality = the inferred totality of persistent structure giving rise to experience.

Everything that follows is derived from these concepts.

The concrete domain consists of what is directly present to a system.

  • Experience = the occurrence of subjective phenomena.

  • Observation = acquisition of information through experience.

  • Availability = information accessible to a system.

  • Awareness = the availability of information to a system.

  • Experiential awareness = information available through experience.

  • Attention = selective prioritization of awareness.

  • Memory = information retained through time.

  • Experience history = accumulated memories produced by observations and actions.

Experience is immediate. It is not constructed from models.

Models are constructed from experience.

The abstract domain begins when experience is organized.

  • Pattern = recurring information.

  • Structure = organized relationships between information.

  • Perception = organizing information into internal structure.

  • Model = an internal representation intended to preserve the structure of reality.

  • System = a set of interacting entities that can be treated as a whole.

Models need not reproduce reality perfectly.

They only need to preserve enough structure to support useful reasoning.

Truth naturally follows from models.

  • Truth = the alignment between a model’s structure and the structure of reality.

  • Falsity = the degree of misalignment between a model’s structure and the structure of reality.

Truth is therefore not a property of isolated propositions.

Truth is a property of structural correspondence.

A model is truer when it preserves more of reality’s underlying organization.

From truth emerge several additional concepts.

  • Prediction = inferring unknown or future states from a model.

  • Explanation = accounting for observations using a model.

  • Inference = deriving new conclusions from existing models.

  • Belief = accepting a model as sufficiently aligned to guide reasoning or action.

  • Knowledge = belief supported by consistently strong structural alignment with reality.

  • Understanding = possession of coherent models that accurately preserve relevant structure.

  • Uncertainty = incomplete confidence regarding a model’s alignment.

  • Ignorance = absence of sufficient information or sufficiently accurate models.

  • Error = mismatch between expectation and reality.

  • Learning = reducing error through refinement of models.

  • Correction = modification that reduces error.

Learning continually improves truth.

Knowledge accumulates successful learning.

Intelligence operates entirely within the abstract domain.

It reasons over models rather than reality itself.

A system first acquires information, constructs models, and then searches those models for solutions.

Problems require objectives.

  • Objective = a criterion for evaluating states or paths.

  • Goal = a preferred state.

  • Problem = the difference between the current state and a goal state.

  • Solution = a path transforming the current state into the goal state.

Once problems exist, intelligence follows naturally.

  • Reasoning = discovering or evaluating paths.

  • Intelligence = the capability to discover effective paths.

  • Creativity = the capability to discover previously unknown paths.

  • Optimization = searching for better paths according to an objective.

  • Planning = searching for a path toward a goal.

  • Decision = selecting one path from competing alternatives.

  • Action = causing a transition along the selected path.

Intelligence therefore concerns problem solving.

It does not require experience.

Likewise, experience does not require sophisticated intelligence.

The two are independent dimensions.

Some concepts require a system capable of acting.

  • Agent = a system capable of observation, modeling, reasoning, action, learning, and adaptation.

  • Environment = everything external to an agent.

  • Feedback = information produced by the consequences of action.

  • Adaptation = modifying models or behavior using feedback.

Information may also be exchanged.

  • Communication = transmitting information between agents.

  • Agreement = sufficiently aligned models between agents.

  • Disagreement = meaningfully different models.

  • Lie = intentionally communicating information believed to increase another agent’s error.

  • Deception = causing another agent to adopt or maintain greater error.

Notice the distinction.

Truth and falsity describe models.

Belief, knowledge, and understanding describe an agent’s relationship to models.

Lies and deception describe intentional acts of communication.

The concrete and abstract domains eventually intersect.

Experience may become organized.

Information may become available.

Models may represent not only the external world, but also the system itself.

  • Self-model = a model representing the agent itself.

  • Self-awareness = awareness that includes a self-model.

  • Cognitive awareness = information available for reasoning.

  • Consciousness = integrated experience.

Consciousness and intelligence therefore occupy independent axes.

One concerns the organization of experience.

The other concerns the capability to solve problems.

A system may possess:

  • Intelligence without consciousness.

  • Consciousness without high intelligence.

  • Both.

  • Neither.

Neither concept logically requires the other.

The framework can be understood as a progression from experience to intelligence.

Reality contains distinguishable structure, which gives rise to information. Information becomes available through experience and accumulates through observation and memory. As experience grows, recurring information reveals patterns, patterns organize into models, and models become increasingly capable of representing the structure of reality.

Truth measures the quality of those models. The better a model preserves reality’s underlying structure, the truer it is. Accurate models enable prediction, explanation, and understanding, while learning continually refines them by reducing error. Over time, successful learning accumulates into knowledge.

Intelligence operates on these models rather than on reality directly. Goals define problems, problems require solutions, and reasoning searches for paths from the current state to a preferred one. Intelligence is therefore the capability to discover effective solutions, while creativity is the capability to discover previously unknown ones.

Agents close the loop by observing, modeling, reasoning, acting, communicating, learning, and adapting. Through this continual cycle, their models become progressively better aligned with reality.

Within this framework, consciousness and intelligence occupy complementary but independent roles. Consciousness belongs to the concrete domain of integrated experience. Intelligence belongs to the abstract domain of reasoning over models. One concerns what is experienced, the other concerns how problems are solved. Truth bridges these domains by measuring how faithfully abstract models preserve the structure of reality revealed through experience.
