I love church. I almost want to make that this whole post. I love church beyond reason.
I love hymns and I also love camp songs. I love communal prayer because I forget to pray.
I love the coffee although I’ll fight to make it stronger.
I love that church is so often the birthplace of spaces and organizations for the people Jesus loved (and loves).
I love seeing my people each Sunday, such a thoughtful, ambiverted ragtag bunch. And there’s a choir. And a band.
I love that we always read from the Bible. From a lot of it. While only half listening and knowing we could listen better.
I love that Jesus loves it, and promised to always show up in it as his real self.
I love that tomorrow we’ll read a story of Jesus walking on water which we only half believe but also believe believing even less than that is more than enough.
I love the little nooks and crannies, the sacristy with the candles and the shower room for the residents and the classroom with a mural from the 1990s and closet with clothes for every gender and especially those discovering.
I love that it’s a campus, a free space, a place you can’t buy anything and can’t sell anything but you can weep tears as currency and laugh laughs of gold.
I love that it’s resistance, that it’s a place for people and the world together in a way that cannot be commodified.
I love that it strives to be good by first admitting to how it is not.
I love that everyone knows what it could or should be and when we say those things especially the almost impossible ones it’s a chance to actually try and do the impossible and inspiration to believe we can.
I love the little bread and little drips of grape in the little cups and the water free to splash.
I hope my love rubs off.
