During the 2026 heatwave, early European adopters of agrivoltaics have seen the moisture-retaining shade effect of solar panels save their harvest! For example, the Wimmer traditional hop farm in Bavaria, Germany has protected this year’s yield (and taste) with solar canopies, and now plans to expand to 20 hectares and add a small battery.
A recent study from the University of Hohenheim found that barley, beans, potatoes, cabbage, and maize all adapt well to agrivoltaics, changing their use of photosynthesis to use CO2 more efficiently in the partially shaded conditions.
And recent research with fig and olive crops in Puglia, Italy found during the heatwave that elevated solar panel canopies can lower soil temperatures by as much as 20 degrees Celsius compared to directly sun-exposed soils! It’s a resilience multi-tool.
These are just a few of the latest case studies in the growing mountain of evidence about agrivoltaic benefits pouring in from around the world!
Early agrivoltaics adopter China had over 500 agrivoltaics projects two years ago in 2024, and many more have been built since. Solar panels have been installed over sites ranging from livestock grazing areas in Inner Mongolia to tea plantations in Yunnan to leafy vegetable-growing greenhouses on the island of Hainan to underwater sea cucumber farms in Shandong.
Humanity is starting to realize that we can now set up an array of solar panels above almost any form of food production. Solar panels provide shade during hot days, which both directly shields what’s below from UV radiation and improves water retention in the soil. That benefits everything from sheep to strawberries to sugarcane!
State leaders should actively encourage and incentivize all forms of agrivoltaics, from solar grazing to row crops to greenhouses to aquaculture. Policymakers can accelerate this epic win-win by spreading the word and ensuring fast-acting and supportive legal, regulatory, and permitting structures!
Illinois has become an agrivoltaics hotspot lately thanks to recently passed laws both forbidding nonsensical local-level solar bans and fast-tracking permitting for community solar and agrivoltaics. And Virginia recently passed a bill creating a formal legal definition for “agrivoltaics” as a prelude to supporting more farmers’ adoption. These are great models to follow!
