When we purchase cheese in our house it doesn’t last that long. At least not long enough to go bad, grow mold, etc. We usually get our cheese at Aldi’s. We love the variety and price. The cheeses sold there are known as industrial cheese. Large scale production, focusing on consistency, and a long shelf life. The long shelf life part is where the preservatives come into play. The cheeses do not get moldy like they did when I was younger.

Recently, we have been getting our cheese at Whole Foods because their 365 brands are excellent and because I work there. Personally I love all of their 365 items except for the mayo. We bought some of the white cheddar and had a small chunk leftover. I was surprised to find that it eventually got very moldy. I was not disgusted but, well, excited. No preservatives! Imagine that! You can put a Twinkie or a McDonald’s hamburger in a plastic case and put it on a shelf. It will go bad eventually but not for a long time. Highly processed and inflammatory foods are served there. People eat fast food because of the price and convenience. Most do not take into account the health risks. Learning to cook at home can reduce the yucky food and reduce health risks.

Here are two more recipes that are inexpensive per serving and can be a bit healthier for you. Here is a link to the first two I posted a last month. First is my two ingredient turkey burger. Yes, just two ingredients for the burgers. Ground turkey and Italian sausage. A one-to-one ratio. No other ingredients for the burger. There is enough seasoning in the sausage to season the ground turkey and keep it moist. Some grocery stores make italian sausage using ground turkey instead of ground pork. The price per burger is $2.73. This is based on my local Giant Eagle. Purchasing the ingredients at a store such as Whole Foods would not increase the price of the burgers by much.

Turkey Burgers

Ground turkey $6.00

Italian sausage 4.69

Buns 1.69

Cheese 3.99

Total $16.37

Servings 6

Cost Per Serving $2.73

We have been making these burgers for about 20 years. They are easy to make and can be made ahead of time. Don’t forget the Everything Sauce!

What’s a burger without a salad? We stumbled across this salad recipe years ago and have been modifying it ever since. It is inexpensive and delicious. The ingredients can be changed to meet different tastes and the changing seasons. It is light and refreshing, making it a great choice for picnics and cookouts. The crunch of the ramen noodles really adds to the salad. The recipe can also take this one in many directions by changing up the onion, nuts, and dressing. Make it your own! The price per serving comes to $1.43. The price will fluctuate with the change of ingredients but the difference will be nominal.

Broccoli Ramen Slaw

Dressing $3.00

Broccoli slaw 2.99

Ramen noodles 1.30

Red onion 0.87

Sunflower seeds 1.75

Sliced almonds 1.49

Total $11.40

Servings 8

Cost Per Serving $1.43

So this will give you dinner for a little over $4.00. $4.16 to be exact. Will it be enough for some members of your family? Maybe not. But a five pound bag of potatoes is $6.00 at Giant Eagle. There are about 8 large potatoes in the bag. That is .75 per potato. You can also dice them up and roast them. And guess what? I have a recipe for seasoned oven roasted potatoes! So this brings the whole meal to around $5.00.

Eating processed foods from fast foods restaurants and even decent restaurants can lead to serious health problems. Dr Andrew Weil’s website can give you loads of professional advice on anti inflammatory foods. He is a doctor and I have not even played one on tv.

Please learn to cook at home for your sake and your family’s sake. Learning to cook will establish habits for your family that will last a lifetime.
