As most of you probably know, there is going to be a Special Election to replace Former District 1 Commissioner Steve West. The candidate elected will be YOUR representation on the Board of Commissioners.
The Avery Rezoning has shown us firsthand how a commissioner who does not align with the will of their constituents can profoundly affect the community—often in ways we could never have imagined. We’ve all witnessed just how influential a county commissioner can be. Of all our local elected officials, the commissioner arguably holds the greatest power over our day-to-day lives—shaping decisions on taxes, zoning, public spending, law enforcement, fire services, parks and recreation, key board member appointments (like the Board of Elections and the Transportation Authority), land use, infrastructure such as roads, water, and sewer systems, and overall county administration. The stakes are high, and leadership matters. Let’s not let big money win another political position in Cherokee County who will make decisions that will affect you and your family. Putting the right person in that position is extremely important.
District 1 has approximately 60,000 registered voters. On average, only about 20% of those are “active” voters. For special elections, just as this, only a fraction will go to the polls. The few that do go to the polls will be selecting our next commissioner.
It is anticipated that around 3,000 votes will be needed to win, with as little as 100 votes deciding the election. Your vote matters! The Special Election is YOUR chance to vote someone IN that will represent the constituents, not the developers. Get out and vote and encourage others to do the same. A small number of votes will decide the Special Election.
There were 1,145 people who signed the petition opposing the Avery rezoning. Those numbers can easily sway the outcome of the Special Election. Your vote has the ability to directly impact the community we love and share.
If you are eligible to vote in District 1, please vote. If you are not within District 1, help spread the word to get out and vote. Tell all your friends and family we need their vote.
Let’s not get comfortable with “Vote them out of office” when posting on social media and not follow through. Voting is the way we start to get our voices heard. Having someone on the Board who wants to hear our concerns and will work FOR the community is absolutely crucial.
At the same time, there is also a Special Election to replace Former District 21 State Senator Brandon Beach who accepted an appointment by President Trump to be Treasurer of the United States. In this race, there are 5 Republican candidates and one Democratic candidate. With a field this large, the likelihood of a run-off election is very high. Again in this race, your single vote could make a difference both in the Special Election and in the Run-off.
Senate District 21 encompasses areas in both Fulton and Cherokee Counties with Fulton having the larger number of registered voters. Many have mentioned that we who live in Cherokee County have different priorities than some of the voters in the Milton and Alpharetta areas of Fulton County. That if we want our voices heard, we should make sure to get to the polls either for Early Voting or on Election Day.
Special elections do not draw the number of voters to the polls that a General Election would. With your help, we can change that statistic. We can make the statement that we care about our community both at the County and State level.
Mark your calendars, early voting starts on August 4 and the Election Day for the Special Election is August 26. Encourage your friends and neighbors to go exercise their right to vote as well.
